UC flare ups? Urgent.

Hey guys!

I honestly didn't know where to post this question, my mum is already really upset because of my flare ups and all... But i had a sever flare up 3-4 months ago when i recently got off prednisone, now before we go any further i was diagnosed with UC when i was around 8-9 yrs old, im a boy. I'm now 14. I've always had regular flare ups, I'm usually on a lot of medication. But currently im only on mesalazine and vitamin D. I just got off another set of preds, but its been around 3 weeks now and i just went to the toilet like i normally do, started out with diarrhoea, then just now i got blood again.

I honestly do not know what to do now, I was a grade A student, and because of this im slipping in school. The only options according to my doctors are either Azathioprine (Imuran) or Surgery. I don't want either! I've heard way too many bad things about Azathioprine. Could anyone please help me out on what to do. I really don't want to tell my doctors, I know that is unreasonable but you've got to understand. I've never had a moments rest ever since i was diagnosed. Any diet tips? Living tips? anything?

Thanks ever so much.

Hey hows it going kid. My name is Danny and I completely understand how you feel and where your coming from. I was diagnosed with UC when i was 15 and my symptoms were horrific. Im 23 now. for years the doctors nor myself could get it under control. I've taken countless amounts of pills and had to go in for remicade treatments for a year. and yet no results. I would keep track of what i ate, made sure I didn't consume any fiber or whole grains like the doctors tell you, but nothing. Finally the doctors told me I have one last chance in hopes that this medication works or else surgery was the only option. Like you, I would not accept that option. So, since nothing was working, I decided to stop taking my meds. Completely stopped. Now, this is coming from a guy (me) who was sick from symptoms for years. And once i stopped my medication, within a couple weeks I noticed a change. I felt good. Not completely 100% better but I felt good. Then from a couple weeks it went to a month and a half, and I was still getting better. Throughout this time, I was telling my parents and doctors that I was taking my meds but really I wasnt. So when it came time for my next appointment my doctor had noticed i was looking good, so I told him the news. He was furious and scheduled a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Results of that was amazing. I was looking so much better. From then on, i have not taken 1 single pill, nor have I returned to the doctors since then and that is no joke.

The point of this is not me telling you to stop taking your meds, nor am I saying dont listen to your doctors, or that medicine doesnt work. but what Im saying is sometimes we have to be our own doctors and see what works and what does not. because in the end, only WE know how our body feels. WE know if a certain medicine is making us worse. Too much medication isnt good after a period of time. So like I said, Im not saying to stop. Just pay attention to your body and I wish you the best of luck. Keep your spirits high. You'll pull thru this. Keeping fighting brother. Dont give up.

Hi there. I have had uc for 25 years and just month or so discovered ' my cure'. 1 teaspoon of lepicol with probiotics It's the one with the green band on it along with 1 teaspoon of psyllium seed ( get it online at just ingredients) it's only place I could get it and 1 teaspoon of hemp seed. Put all in glass of water leave overnight. It's kinda gel like in am. If u can't take it gel like just bung all in glass of water and drink down followed by another glass of water. U can start of with this few times a day and then come down to less of if u want to. The psyllium seed has got to do with butyric acid which is good for coloncytes in your bowel and reduces inflammation. U can google and get more info if u wish on it.

Also diet is important too. I avoid fruit because of fructose , yogurts and yogurt type drinks ( sugar in these things are a killer for uc) found wheat in bread cereals etc can be harsh too. I bought genius bread at supermarket gluten free not be so I was intolerant but more sensitive to it. U can schuss out ur own foods that don't agree with u be so everyone is different. Take good multivitamin too. Sugar in general is bad but I have found since I started my glass of psyllium etc I can tolerate things a bit more. So if u wish u can try this and I wish u luck with it. I no it's made mega difference to me and I now have no bother with mine.

I just came across this. Has anyone heard of it or tried it?

    Whipworm Therapy

An interesting observation is that infection with the pig whipworm may be effective treatment for ulcerative colitis. Scientists believe that the worms that inhabit the colon alter the immune response and thereby reduce the inflammation. In one study, 43% of patients with ulcerative colitis improved after ingesting pig whipworm eggs for 12 weeks. The impetus for investigating treatment with the whipworm came from the observation that ulcerative colitis was not common in developing countries where intestinal parasitic diseases are common.
