Hi am 29 year old male just thought s would share my of ulcerated colitis started in July 2017 was going to the toilet 10 plus times a day with LOTS of blood every time I had bowel movement would Turn the toilet water bright red and would have to wipe several times and would literally just be blood on the toilet paper . Was scared at first to go to the doctors so stupidly kept it to myself for 3 months before picking up the courage to go see my gp when i did eventually go to gp appointment it was brushed off by my doctor as internal piles cause of my age (29) and literally at that time my only symptom was the bleeding . So my doctor referred me to a specialist but because it was put through as piles it’s not seen as urgent so was told could wait 3 month to see this specialist long story short never got as far as that appointment 2 month later I just became really unwel was that bad thought I had the flu was bed bound for a week wasn’t eating or drinking  and again was going to toilet 10 plus times a day but this time going to the toilet and having a bowel movement was soooo painful would grip the toilet bowel with my both hands and would grit my teeth to get through the pain . Eventually went upto A&E at the hospital and was admitted that same night blood tests confirmed sever inflammation and a colonoscopy the following morning confirmed sever ulcerated colitis. During my stay at hospital they exhausted all the medications steroids/infliximab nothing worked so had to have surgery to remove large bowel in some cases like mines the inflammation can get sever I have always been healthy never really had any health issues so was a bit of a rollercoaster and especially how fast on my case it happened symptoms stated July 2017 and by end of jan 2018 went from 15 stone to 11 stone and having my bowl removed

I'm so sorry you suffered like this. How scared you must have been to be so sick and to have the condition escalate so quickly.

I was given a similar brush off with the diagnosis of 'piles.' It's amazing how incurious doctors are at rectal bleeding. It's like they don't even study UC at school. (We know they do!)  I had similar symptoms on the toilet too. It felt like I was passing glass through my rectum.

Please know you are not alone!

Yeah was really scary from being a young man who goes to gym  4/5 days a week and never had any history of bad health to be sat down by a surgeon and told you need emergency surgery to remove your colon and you will have a ileostomy bag I felt gutted. but had to happen  to save my life that’s how bad my uc was as I said previously lost 4 plus stone plus And had a really bad pale complex as I later learned I needed 6 blood transfusions during and after surgery so was a real scary time it’s good to know that am not alone as you do feel like that’s the case when something like this happens to you as before this happening I had never even heard of ulcerated colitis
