Ulcerative colitis?

Hi everyone,

Being in the process of diagnosing what is wrong with me (I am waiting for the referral for a colonoscopy to finally go through), I was wondering if any of you had a return of experience/advice regarding my symptoms.

Long story short, I have been having bowel issue since January this year, mostly on the loose side even though rarely diarrhea (still happens from time to time). I had been putting it onto the fact that I had taken two courses of penicillin in December and June + another course of other antibiotics in August. However, and regardless of how many probiotics I would take, there was little improvements. I also noticed blood three times, but put it onto what I had done the day before (started a new medicine, ate at a restaurant, and drank). Some mucus at some point as well, but seems to have cleared out. I had some blood and stool tests done for inflammation, the blood test (C-Reactivwe protein) came back as normal and the stool test (calprotectin) showed some inflammation.

As far as symptoms go, I usually go to the loo once/twice a day, with ups and downs (sometimes on the normal side, sometimes looser) and some discomfort (no real pain, but a lot of gurgling).

Has anyone had similar symptoms and could help?

Thanks!

Tom.

    Hello Tom

I have had recurring proctitis after a course in Antibiotics, or possibly other reasons (e.g. Gojiberries?) no one knows. What worked for me was an enema called Budanofalk. It is perscription drug through your specialist docotor only. Cheers.

Hi Tom, I'm in a similar situation to yourself - I almost continuously have blood and/or excessive mucus in my stool, sometimes I have the urge to go and it's only blood/mucus that comes out. After a few doctors appointments they suspect I have inflammatory bowel disease, I don't know if this would be UC or Crohn's.

I have a 13 week wait time (despite the referral being urgent) before I can see a specialist, and I'm waiting for results from my blood and stool tests.

In a way I think it would be a relief to get a diagnosis for something so I can act on it, but I am trying to be proactive in the meantime and reading as much as possible about IBD and anything I can do to relieve the symptoms (if that is what I have).

I recently finished reading the Clever Guts Diet by Dr Michael Mosley, although there isn't a great deal of information specifically about IBD in there, it's a fascinating book to learn about gut bacteria, what kinds of foods you can eat to promote certain bacteria and what they do.

I've started keeping a food diary to see if I can see any particular foods are aggravating my symptoms as my bloating is very uncomfortable sometimes, often accompanied by pretty bad wind. I am also getting a lot of stomach gurgling.

I'm trying to introduce some new foods (as recommended by the book), and just eat more varied and healthily, avoiding sugary stuff. At the moment I'm trying to cut down dairy and bread and increase fibre, and drink loads of water, no improvements yet but it's early days still!
