Ultrasound and gyno follow up

Hello i am 48 and after a 3.5 week bleed in October my dr sent me for a ultrasound which showed a fibroid 2.5cm and enlarged ovaries, one being with two simple cysts and the other enlarged with a heterogenous texture.a gyno follow up who wasn't too concerned but I have a repeat ultrasound after my next period and then a follow up in feb.i thought enlarged ovaries was dangerous could someone tell me what the causes can be as I know cysts can which reassures me but one ovary is only enlarged with a heterogenous texture. Can anyone give me advise please thank you michelle

Hi Michelle. The next ultrasound should help them to decide what type of cyst you have and why the ovary is enlarged. If they'd thought it serious you would have been called back within 2 weeks I'm told! I've been waiting for a hospital appointment in Gyny, since November when I had a scan which showed similar cysts to yours. I also have a rectocele prolapse so hoping they will be able to fix all at the same time. I'm 72 and they're still not hurrying! rolleyes My appointment is on Jan 13th! Glad I'm not superstitious, lol. confused Good luck, keep in touch on here and we can compare notes. smile

Hi Michelle. I went to the GP because I have prolapse, rectocele again! I've previously had a hysterectomy/cystocele at age 40, then later a rectocele about 13 years ago. While there I asked if she could do the blood test CA125 for ovarian cancer as my mother passed away with it age 70, in 1975. I've been feeling off colour, no energy and back pain for sometime now but put it down to the osteo arthritis I have in spine and other joints. However, I've been having problems with BM's lately, plus getting almost incontinent with bladder too so that's what took me to see her, (GP) in the first place. She was very good, unlike some of the male docs in the practice, she listened and sent me for blood tests and ultra sound scan. The CA125 levels were normal but the scan showed two cysts, one on right is quite large, about 1 1/2 to 2ins. On the left ovary it's small about 1/2 in. They look like simple cysts being on what she called a 'stalk'! These plus the family history were taken into account and she referred me to a consultant gyny at the local hospital. So now I only have a couple more weeks to wait and see what happens next! I'll update when I've had my hospital appointment. Best wishes Ellie rolleyes

Hello Ellie how did you get on yesterday ? Hope all went well 😊I had my repeat scan and it showed same enlarged heterogenous texture in ovary but the other obey which had two simple cysts couldn't be seen as there was too much free fluid round it ?! She didn't seem to concerned just told me to follow up with gyno at next appt! I don't know what free fluid is around ovary and wonder if my simple cysts have burst or something causing free fluid.let me know how you got on take care Michelle xx

Hi Michelle. The doc examined me after looking at first scan results. She said as the cyst was 'only' 6cms on last scan in November, they would do another scan in a week or two, just wait for the appointment! With regard to the prolapse, it's the bladder apparently not the bowel. As I'm 72 and already had a hysterectomy and two prolapse ops the treatment is limited. It seems surgery and age weaken the tissues. They may be able to insert a mesh to strengthen the muscle. They are going to make a 'plan'! confused ooer.....All this makes me think I'm not very suitable for more surgery due to my age! All this because of my family history, my Mother had ovarian cancer way back in the 70's. I have to wait now for an appointment to check bladder capacity and ability to hold urine as I do leak if I have to wait for the loo, especially when I get up out bed. sad When all the information comes together I will be sent a letter and appointment, (hopefully)! I'm not good at waiting but there is a long list for this type of thing here in the UK. If all else fails I will ask to be seen privately by the consultant. I saw his registrar yesterday. it was extremely busy due to a strike by junior doctors on Tuesday. So not a very happy bunny at the moment!cry

I don't know much about "free fluid" etc but could be as you say. Can you ask your GP rather than wait for consultants follow up appoitnment? I'm sure someone with more knowledge will answer your questions on here though.

    Best wishes, Pollyanna
