Ultrasound normal...where to go from here?

HI, I'm 29 years old and for 24 years, so since I was 5, I have problems urinating.

My problem is that my brain or that's what it now seems like, does not register when my bladder is full until right at the last minute and when I do need to go sometimes it's too late and I leak and other times I almost leak but don't if I hold myself.

I have tried retraining my bladder to see if that helps, my bladder doesn't seem to want to empty even after I drink something.

I had an ultrasound scan of my kidneys and bladder before and after I emptied it and everything is normal. I feel so silly for going to this appointment and finding everything is normal when I have had this problem for so long. I have no idea what the doctor will do now or if anything more will be done at all.

Also, last night, I had pains in my ribs and when I urinated it burned as it came out. I am now under the impression that my bladder and kidneys are fine. I am at a loss.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

please don't be embarassed or feel silly about going to the doctor. this is a condition that is affecting you.

your doctor has been thorough and ruled out other problems by doing the ultrasound. now it will be useful to discuss the other options available to you eg if there are any medications.

    good luck

Thanks, I really don't know what to expect. I know the urologist was considering an intermittent catheterisation and filling my bladder up to see how much it'd take before I would get that "bursting" feeling but they may not do that now. I'm also due to go away on holiday tomorrow so not knowing what they will write to me and say is on my mind a bit. sad

Hi Jay. sorry you have the problem.  I hope they get to find out the cause and are able to do something about it.  Maybe they will suggest self catherterisation so that you are able to empty your bladder at regular intervals.  Have they checked for a bladder infection?   The burning sounds lke you could have an infection.

Good luck, I know how difficult it is and it can feel embarrassing, but you are doing your best to find out what's wrong, so don't get too down on yourself.  You'll find out eventually.

Hi, when I went to the ultrasound scan yesterday I told the nurse doing the scan I had pain on urination, she didn't ask for a sample. It might have helped if she did.

I had something called pyuria 2 months back but I had no symptoms so nothing was done.

Hi Jay, i think you should go back to your doctor and take a urine sample and see if you still have pyuria.  I've just googled it and it does sound like it indicated an infection, it may have got worse since you had it 2 months ago.  I find it so annoying when you mention something and it is ignored.  It wouldn't have taken much to have had your urine sampled.

Hi thanks for checking it out for me. I had a urine test done after this pyuria was found but this was before the ultrasound was even considered and the urology consultant I spoke to made no mention of whether my urine sample was fine or not. I thought, given the fact I had pyuria in my urine 4 weeks prior to the appointment with urology, the infection would still be there. I don't know how it could have been flushed out just like that.

I am worried that since the stinging has stopped, if I go back to the doctor and get tested for a urine infection again, nothing will show up and nothing will get done about it. Not that I want something to be wrong with me but I don't know why these infections keep happening and I have these bladder problems with no structural abnormality.

Hi Jay, I know there is nothing worse than not knowing.  Doctors have a way of making us seem small and that we shouldn't question anything that they say.

At least the stinging has stopped.  That's something anyway.   It is possible that your defences have killed off the infection.

I hope you manage to get to root of your bladder problem, I suppose it is a case of keep fighting for the medical profession to find out what the problem is.

Perhaps someone on here will see your post and have an answer too.

Don't give up, it's obviously not right, so there has to be an answer.

      Good luck.

Thanks, yes. I will keep fighting and hopefully something will be found. I am sure it's a neurological problem now, especially since I have a tremor in one hand. I'm seeing my doctor about this when I return from my holiday but it's like my previous doctor has said, it's worrying a woman of my age has problems with her bladder and it needs investigating. I dropped in a sample which contained blood and i'm just waiting to hear back now.

I'm glad to hear that they are taking it seriously, I hope that is reassuring for you.  Sorry that you are getting further problems.

Yes, the hospital has my number and they'll let me know by tomorrow. I don't see it being anything serious myself because I am on a period and they'll say that it's normal for blood to appear in urine during a period. Maybe another infection will perhaps crop up.

Hi, so I've had the results back from my urine sample as the care centre I went to took my number. As I had thought, the blood in the sample was most likely due to my period because the blood was in clumps. However the nurse I spoke to said I had "a little infection" and there were white blood cells. I presume those would be leukocytes.

She asked me if I had problems down there, I told her that for as long as I can remember I get lots of white discharge, kind of like lubrication fluid but comes out whenever and in big drops when I look in my pants when taking them off. I sometimes get thick white clumps on my outer vagina, she advised me to go back to my GP when I return home.

My doctors have already asked me if I am sexually active and I tell them no because I've never ever had sex. So why I keep getting these infections in the first place is confusing but I hope my doctors have an answer for me when I get back and tell them.
