Umbilical Hernia Advice

hi

i have a small umbilical hernia. like a lump in my belly button. ive seen 2 doctors and both of them say leave it be as it may go away as i loose weight. it came as one day my belly swelled up massively and i guess thats how it started. iy does reduce when i lie down etc and gets worse when i stand for long periods of time. i also think that this is what is causing my constipation even tho the docs says its IBS. i go for a poo poss only every 3 to 4 days now and used to be twice a day. the hernia and around the belly button gets really hard when ive not been. but when i have been it gets better for a little while then starts again. what do you think? some people tell me i need it operating on and it will not go away. and do you think its causing the contsipation

Three weeks ago, while out with a friend I had severe pain at my bellybutton. It lasted about 20 minutes and I had to go sit down. I remember thinking that I may just need to go to the emergency room. But then it was just a dull pain. I'd joked with a friend that I thought I'd herniated my bellybutton (not knowing there was even such a thing) and she recommened seeing a doctor. As I started googling herniated bellybutton I realized what I had was not so uncommon (in fact, many of my family members had undergone the surgery). The GP I saw said it was very small and I could wait to have the surgery until I got home (I'm currently living in India, but am from the USA). Once I explained that to him he said, "Oh, then we can have you meet with the surgeon and schedule at your convenience." My thoughts, isn't repairing something when it's small and not causing any risks better than having to do it when it's an emergency. And I also thought that recovery would be much easier.

I had the surgery 6 days ago. While in the USA they do it outpatient, here I was admitted to the hospital the night before and was supposed to leave the day after. But there were adhessions that complicated the surgery - just enough to require an extra day in the hospital. I was on only water the first 1.5 day, then clear liquids and the day of my discharge, they finally brought me something that resembled more real food and tea!

I needed that extra time there. The pain was more than I anticipated, but throughout the day I was able to push myself a little bit harder. I still need to take it easy and am wearing an abdominial binder which has been an amazing help - I highly recommend it. Hurt like holy heck the first day or two that I wore it, but this morning I had a much easier time with it. And, because I had the laparoscopic surgery, I was filled with carbon dioxide which left me with so much additional swelling from the gas that remained. The binder has really helped reduce the size of my tummy.

All that to say, at this point, I'm glad I had the surgery early on in the discovery period.
