Unacceptable side effects of Levothyroxine

Posted , 191 users are following.

I was described Levothryoxine 2 years ago and my GP has increased it until I am now taking 125mcg.I have never had so many various symptoms in my life - severe weight gain including puffy face and eyes, very itchy dry skin, brittle nails, thinning hair but the major items are the pains in my joints and muscles - especially in my knees and my hands. The doctor said I have carpal tunnel syndrome and also now have high cholesterol,,,,,,, When reading other peoples' experiences it would appear that many people have all of these symptoms so why is it that GP's do not take this illness more seriously. I recently asked if I could have a full blood showing all readings and also if I could be prescribed Armour and was told no. It also scared me to find that several pharmacists in major chemists haad never even heard of Armour. Has anyone felt like they have had enough and just stopped taking Levothyroxine and what was the result?

I went to my gp on friday to get an appointment to see my specialist on seeing the gp i explained all the side affects and symptoms i have been getting and that i wasnt alone, that alot of ppl were in the same position as myself, she gave me a choose and book to refer myself to the specialist, unfortunately atm there are no appointments so i have to wait but i have to say, ive been suffering with back pain for a while now and was on the verge of stopping them i reduced my dose from 75 down to 50 and the pain has all but gone, Also i had to pick up my prescription from the doctors on friday for more levothyroxine and just a coincidence the pharmacist came out and actually asked me how i was getting on with this medication and when i told him about my symptoms he said that they were all side affects from levothyroxine and that i should make an appointment to see the specialist as he doesnt think that leveothyroxine is good for me and that i may need to change these meds, i had to laugh as he was telling me something i already knew, i have recently also started to take vitamins and cod liver oil tablets to see if they will help (what harm can it do)

I had my thyroid removed 30 years ago at the age of 20. I am now 50. In the last 30 years I have had so many tests done due to muscle weakness. The tests have all come back as 'normal' but I am getting weaker, my legs give way up to ten times a day and I can no longer get up off the floor unaided. I am fuming that all this could be down to a drug I am taking. I am off to the doctors tomorrow to discuss whether I can take the natural Armour desiccated thyroid hormone, because I feel that if I cannot get up off the floor on my own at 50 then at 60 I will be to scared to leave the house. I have lots of muscle pain , headaches, high blood pressure and high eye pressure and this could all be down to this awful drug levothyroxine

Just read your story on muscle weaknes. My first doctor straight up told me this stuff causes swelling of the joints, deteriorization of different stuff including muscle loss. She recommened I take anti inflamitaries and steroids ( not the crazy weight lifter kind) but still. She told me. I can feel some of what shes was talking about but I think ill pass on taking anything else till I absolutely have to. She also recommended those fish oils but ill pass on the increased mercury level on taking that

High blood pressure and eye pressure are symptoms of hyperthyroidism so maybe you are on too high a dose.

Keep nagging your doctor (or get another doctor) to put you on NDT Armour. I had very similar symptoms for a couple of years until I moved to NDT.

I have been on levothyroxine for about four years now. I've had one increase in dosage and that we back in the fall. Since October, I have been experiencing extreme dryness in my throat. I'm a music teacher and haven't had my full range of singing voice for these past few months. I kept thinking that it was from colds and then dry winter weather but this is really not getting any better. Has anyone ever experienced having dry throat in the process of figuring out correct dosage? I feel like I may need a higher dosage. My mom has struggled with hypothyroidism and has had to correct her dosage many times due. When she first found out about her condition, she couldn't even swallow it was so bad. Now that her dosage is correct and she knows the signs for changes in her body, she is doing well. She also regulates her own meds in that she halves the dose if she experiences signs of hyperthyroidism and increases it if she feels the opposite. She only does this until she gets the bloodwork and is able to get the correct dosage. Her doctor has also been difficult to work with in finding answers so she has had to do a lot of advocating for herself.

Hi TCBronco, I can't sing when I go underactive. I need to be at the upper range of T4 to feel ok.

I can really relate to your voice problem issue and also with swallowing, glutus maximus?  Also, very much to your mum, in having to adjust and manage doses and be your own health care advocate and manager. The suffering while waiting out the 6 weeks before a follow up retest gets done, IF one gets done, and the endless and long waiting periods between GP appointments, having blood drawn, and then yet another appointment with the GP, for test results. Then pretty soon, the cycle repeats itself all over again and continues year after year. Hashimoto's, NOT merry go round, thyroiditis sad

Hi barbara, same with me re singing. Can't believe how better I am singing after only 9 capules of Armour, over the past 4 and a half days.

Have been hypo for around 7-8 weeks, and was hyper for at least 8 months before blood tests confirmed this.

Am no longer crippled with painful joints and muscles, and I feel calm and happy. Very nervous that it may ease off after time, although doses can be easily adjusted. Also wake up each morning actually feeling refreshed and sinuses are clear. The itchy very dry eye problem I had for so long ahd gone and my eyes literally feel moist and 'normal'.

Hi everyone, I have had hypothyroid for a few years now and am currently on 125 mcg of thyroxine there are a lot of side effects and losing weight is a nightmare, I also have developed tiny gallstones and sometimes acid reflux, I have brain fog at times and still have emotional issues mainly teariness and that sinking feeling when pmsing lol but I tell you please take the medication because the side effects do not outweigh the symptoms which left untreated can shut your whole body down, also remember to cut down on caffine which I had to do as it was the caffine that kept my bp stable when I was undiagnosed. the thyroxine is meant to bring the bp up as this is an indication it is working for those finding it really tough for the first two weeks when I started I took half the 25mcg the first week and increased it to 3/4 of the tablet the second week, my body responded so much better and yay I dont have to sleep with two doonas or have a minki in the summer I no longer have cold hands either,, please please do not leave it and hope it will get better because it does not I was misdiagnosed for years because the doc would not do blood tests, when I went to another doc and he tested guess what I was only a few days of my body going into coma stages it was that bad so please as much as the side effects are shitty it is worth taking the medication and watching the amount of refined carbs and sugars in the diet too.. I hope this helps

I'd just like to take say something POSITIVE about levothrroxine and finally being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed wtih hypothroidism at the age of 26. It was discovered because I had stop having periods, and my horemones meant I was not ovulatating. I had a lovely and supportive doctor who precribed me levothyroxine and after about 6 weeks of funny side effects my body got used to it. My dosage was increased and I am not 37 weeks pregnant with a little girl. I was worried my body would not start ovulation again meaning I wouldnt be able to convieve, but the levothyroxine worked and now I am just about to meet my daughter! The care I have had throughout my pregnancy has been wonderful, so much support and lots of it (as I was classed as high risk due to my thyroid problems)... so not everyone has had a negative experience!!! Mine has been amazing!

Hi Rosy, was one of your side effects dizziness? I've started taking levothyroxine and am experiencing dizziness
    • Posted

Hi Simon, it's worth mentioning dizziness to your doctor. How dizzy do you feel? Is it all the time or only when getting up? There is something called Labyrinthitis which is an infection of the inner ear. It's quite common and it goes away after a while. Though travel sickness pills may be needed as it causes nausea. It can also be a symptom of low blood pressure - if you feel dizzy when getting up.

When I was pregnant with my first child 32 years ago my thyroid gland went overactive , after months of being misdiagnosed I was eventually rushed into hospital with sirens because I was on my deathbed. I was 8 months pregnant and weighed only 7 stone at the time, my normal adult weight was 9.and a half stone ! I gave birth to my boy and then I had my thyroid removed and put on thyroxine tablets. My weight went back to normal, my hair grew back, and the tremors went but since then my muscles have been very weak despite strength exercises. I gave birth to a daughter a few years after my son and I know that without thyroxine I would be dead. I just hate the way it makes me feel so weak. I am so pleased for you rosy smile congratulations x

I've been on levothyroxine for 2-3 years now. Other than occasional dizziness/vertigo, I've not had any side effects. I went on it in order to boost my fertility. It hasn't done much for me yet in that area, but I think my fertility problems have more to do with my aging eggs than my thyroid. Good luck to all struggling with thyroid issues.
