Under investigation for dizziness

I am under investigation for my dizziness, I've had an MRI scan and balance tests (where they poured warm water and cold water down my ears).  I have been prescribed Cinnarizine to take when necessary and am due to see the consultant at the end of this month. The problem is I am still getting my dizziness and I am getting quite worried about it as it's been over a year now.  It can happen anytime when sitting, walking but it's not a room spinning dizziness, more of an unsteady off balance feeling which then leads to a frontal headache a bit like when you look at a bright light which makes you squint and look away.  I am getting quite worried as its knocking my confidence and making me scared to go out.   Does anyone have any opinions about this?  Thanks

After my 'attack' on Wed i rang my consultant's secretary yesterday and i now have an appointment to see my consultant next Wed (i will be keeping my January appointment also).  I need to get to the bottom of this as it is now affecting my work as i've had quite a number of days on sickness leave (all separate times).  I just don't know why i am getting this dizziness even though i am now taking Nortryptalyine etc.  I am now beginning to worry that it may be something else like hear related, MS, etc.  I have had lots of tests ie ECG, MRI, balance tests, hearing tests - i just cannot seem to accept that this is all migraine related as i have never suffered from migraines before.  This by the way has been going on for about a year or so.  Any ideas anyone?

I am pleased to get this appointment so quickly, I think it's because I am going on holiday.  Is there any other medication (apart from Nortryptyline) that can help dizziness?

Hi Carina  have a lovely holiday.  Sometimes i take an antihistamine if i feel fluid in my ear and after flying because it bungs up my years.

I had another 'attack' yesterday afternoon (out of the blue, I was standing up ironing).  My partner was at work, I quickly went to sit down to see if it would pass, after about 10 mins I then took a Cinnarizine tablet and also one Diazepam tranquilliser.  This seemed to help but as usual, it leaves me feeling anxious/scared in case it happens again.  I am due to go out with friends this afternoon so I don't want to take any chances and will take a Cinnarizine tablet before I go (I can take up to 3 tablets a day when required).  I have been making notes to discuss all this with my consultant on Friday, and it can't come soon enough.  I have a full time job and don't want this to take over my life and be worried every time I go to work or go out anywhere.   I'm just confused as to what is causing this and why I'm now getting them more often instead of them going away.  Do you think I should ask for another MRI scan and more tests?

I've been dizzy for 8 years. My ENT said he exhausted all his resources.

    Have you ever tried prednisone?

I had this allergic reaction and it made me feel slightly less dizzy.

What is prednisone?  I am seeing my consultant tomorrow morning and will update

This post may be a bit long but i would appreciate anyone taking the time to read it and to give me some comments.  I went to see my consultant this morning and here is the latest - she has increased my dosage of Nortryptaline to 30mg instead of 20mg and has also prescribed me a drug (can't think what the name is now) and it is for me to pop into my mouth when i start to get the onset of a 'dizzy spell'.  I am due to see her again in January as a follow up.  My MRI (head) which i had done sometime last year threw up a 14mm calcified menigioma (basically it is benign tumour).  As you can imagine, i panicked when i received the letter telling me this but i was told it was nothing to worry about and that i will have a follow up scan next year.  I spoke with my consultant today about this (she is a different consultant to the one regarding the brain scan) and she told me that these cysts are quite common in women (something to do with hormones) but she said that she isn't entirely convinced that my dizziness is NOT due to this cyst ie where the cyst is on the part of my brain, is where it involves movement so that could explain why i feel sort of 'off balance' and feeling being 'pulled to one side' when i walk which can sometimes set off the dizziness.  I am not worried about this cyst as the consultant who saw me regarding it said it was nothing to worry about and he's only doing the follow up scan next year just to make sure the cyst remains stable i suppose.  He said that my dizziness has nothing to do with the cyst whereas my consultant i saw this morning said it could be - i don't know what to think really.  All i can do is hope that the tablets work. I don't need an operation (thank goodness!).   Has anyone had a calcified cyst which has caused them dizziness / vertigo? or would this be a question for a different post?  thanks.

      Dear Carina

thanks for your update.  Sorry to hear you have conflicting opinions on this cyst from different consultants, which doesn't make it easy for you to understand what is causing your dizziness.  I'm inclined to think it would affect your balance dependent on its location.

Hope the increase in your meds help and that other tablet you got to help also.

      Best wishes.  Anne. xx

i've written to the consultant today who arranged the MRI head scan and who will be sending me for a follow up scan next year.  I've asked some questions so i'm sure it won't do any harm in seeing what he has to say about it all.  I do hope the meds will work as i certainly don't want surgery on my brain!! i think i'd rather put up with my dizziness but i am a bit of a chicken when it comes to operations anyway.

very understandable.  I hope it all works out for you without any more problems.  Try not to let the anxiety get too much as we know that does have an effect on the dizzy's.  I know it's easier said than done but my thoughts are with you.  Take care.  Anne. xx

Hello All, just thought i would keep you posted.  I posted a letter to the consultant who diagnosed my 14mm menigioma with my concerns and whether this would contribute to my dizziness.  He sent me a very reassuring letter saying that he will do a follow up scan for me later this year (on my request) but he said it is highly unlikely that this is due to my dizziness and that he is not worried at all about it and that i have nothing to worry about.  I guess after my follow up scan in August, i will be discharged.  The other consultant who i am seeing regarding my dizziness, I will be seeing her next week and i have to say since i have been taking Nortripytyline (x3 small tablets daily), touch wood - my dizziness has been less frequent.  I will of course be discussing this with her next week at my follow up appointment.  I don't particularly want to be taking these tablets all the time as i already take a lot of medication but i can discuss this with her.  I'm just so glad after a horrible year last year with my health, that things will now settle for me (I had such a lot of health issues apart from this one).

Hiya,I 've had 3 episodes of dizziness in the lasts 2 weeks resulting in me staggering to the right hand side.Had to come home from work after the last one.Managed to get a docs appointment and when I explained that I felt as if my head was on time delay similar to watching television when it's not n synch.Have had a few episodes of memory loss too, the doc thinks I 've either had labyrinthine or have had a mild stroke Been subscribed Cinnarazine 15 mg tablets (6 a day) Feel as if my vision is blurred and much slower at doing day to day things. To go for blood tests next week. Not sure what's wrong but unable to go to work as I'm a home support worker who requires a lot of concentration which I don t seem to have at the moment.Had a bit of neck and shoulder pain for a while but that seems to have gone now I m a bit worried as I usually have good health and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to me .Thank you
