Unexplained recurring oral lesion

Since August I have been getting these red, basically flat and non-blistering oral lesions on my soft palate that change day to day and usually last 1-2 weeks. They seem to reoccur about once a month. I have been tested for thrush, every STD, mono, bacterial infections, other fungal infections, Celiac, and even had a biopsy which turned up as normal. I also had an allergy blood test and there was a very slight response to "milk". I have noticed that every time I get this lesion it seems to be after I have something with milk in it (like mac and cheese, or ice cream) but the number that came back on my allergy test was so low that it would normally be ignored. I also can't imagine that eating a tiny amount of ice cream (like one or two bites) could leave my mouth like this for two weeks?

The lesion is generally painless, sometimes starting out as a spot and then ending up as a red ring on my soft palate. It seems to migrate around the palate. Sometimes when it's really large or very red, it kind of feels like it's just irritated, but nothing unbearable. Also, on the days that it's the worst I also sometimes feel like I'm a bit stuffed up in my sinuses. I have no other symptoms at all. Has anyone ever experienced this or does anyone have any ideas? I have been to ENTs, an oral surgeon, dentist, primary care physician, etc. and nobody seems to know what it could be. Could it be related to the milk? Another allergy? Maybe a hormone imbalance?

Hi Rachel I wouldsaythat you need to avoid dairy products in general. Have you seen a dentitst at all?

I am really sorry to hear this and I empathise with you about intolerances and allergies.

      Hi Jane,

Yes, I have seen a dentist too, and he even sent out an image to other dentists to no avail. I seem never to get the lesion when I eat cheese, but maybe I really need to eliminate ALL dairy for a very long time...

I had something similar happening to me but on my tongue and flat like the skin had come off. I've tried a number of things at the same time and they have cleared up now but not sure what was the cause. I started taking a vitamin supliment, including vitamin b complex, made sure I had my five a day, and I started taking tablets for stress/anxiety (that I didn't even realise I was suffering from but the GP said it could be the cause of the mouth issue). I also take fexofenadine which is a prescription only hayfever medicine so maybe ask to try that if it is an allergic reaction.

Interesting... what kind of stress tablets did you take? My doctors told me the same thing although I also doubted that was the cause of these issues. Did your symptom look similar on the tongue to the picture I posted?
