I chose to answer you because I have from time to time felt like this, or at least similar to what you describe. It is most definitely caused by anxiety, but it is often difficult to tell the difference between normal mild anxiety in someone with an anxious personality, and someone a general anxiety disorder.
Normally, symptoms of general anxiety cause you distress and affect your day-to-day activities. In addition, you will usually have at least one of these symptoms:
Feeling restless, on edge, irritable, muscle tension, keyed up, tiring easily, difficulty concentrating, and your mind going blank quite often. This last symptom would seem to account for the feeling we have both experienced. It can sometimes be caused by insomnia, or just difficulty in getting off to sleep.
Don't panic. You are not losing your mind (which is what I thought). It will pass, and it may be a good start to try and get some quality rest, particularly if you have been missing some sleep.
Best wishes to you Rachel. :-)

It's comforting to know that what you are feeing is explainable, and I'm really pleased that Craftylady has responded and pretty well explained how (sadly), she has gone through much the same.
I would never make light of this scary sensation, but truly, you are not unreal, your are not losing your mind, and you can be certain that this is anxiety playing its mean twisted little tricks.
You may have repeat episodes of this, but I hope and pray that in time they will lessen, and your fear of them will subside.
We will be thinking of you, and there is always someone here for you if it gets too much. x
