Unknown Throat Issue

Hi all,

I call this an uknown throat issue because i still have no idea what it is that i'm experiencing and truly i don't think the doctors that i've seen through the years really know either!  What i do know is that i feel i've been to hell and back with this problem and it all starts with my throat, well my throat area anyway.  I have been suffering for more than 2 years now with a major decrease in life quality, in some ways this problem is like a silent torture and i would much prefer an illness that i can actually explain to people and to myself.

I'm sure what the doctors have told most people like myself that it's all in the head and you should just stop thinking about it.  To me that is actually quite 1. disrespectful 2. ignorant and just in no way helpful at all.  This is because the problem still exists and continues to be a major problem. It's an obvious answer to me, you are just ignoring your problem without solving it. Yes if i have aids i can just ignore my symptoms and carry on with my bucket list before i die, that is basically the doctor's answer. (I'm just using that as an extreme example). I would far rather know what my problem is and where my symptoms are coming from rather than just ignoring everything.

Another point is, if the doctor is seriously saying that "it's all in your head" they are implying that you have a mental health problem.  The point is they are guessing, they are not diagnosing you.  It is possible to diagnose a mental health problem through brain scans and seeing which part of your brain blood is being transferred through thus allowing you to see if you are physically anxious, if you have an attention problem or if your brain is working properly.  Maybe this would be too expensive for NHS but i would happily pay for this on a private basis.

I am in no doubt that my brain has suffered from my throat problem but i do not think my throat issue is due to a mental issue because i was not born with either.  It's really a viscious circle, what i am considering is a tonsilectomy because it's possible that my "globus" or swollen throat symptoms and depression are all due to an obstruction in my throat due to swelling of the tonsils.  I did have glandular fever so that may have had an effect on the tonsils too.

In general i don't see how your brain can magically make up a neverending problem in your throat.

I would love to hear your thoughts smile

I was also going to add that i do think this problem needs to be understood better and a CHANGE is needed in the doctors approach in dealing with it.

I too have had these symptons since March when I gave up smoking.  I have put on  a stone in weight which may not help.  My GP said he thought it was an ulcer, though all tests came back negative, plus full blood test.  I finally got to see a gastroenterologist at Cheksea  and Westminster who appeard very bored spoke to me for about 5 minutes and said he would arrange a gastroscopy -,that was 6 weeks ago.  I have been waking in the night with acid reflux and very tired.  I have triied Gaviscon and Zantac, but no great change.  In desperation went to acupuncturist highly recommended, had two visits.  He said that he thinks I have an hiatus hernia and said he could mend it! Also doing the carrot juice diet and have lost 7lbs.  I went into my local health food shop and she recommended some a French alkaline tablets - these have really helped to stop the acid and have a test strip and

my stomach is normal after only 3 days.   I do feel better though still, have globus now and then which as you say is depressing.

i am hoping that I will continue to improve and will let you know.

I am trying to get this word out to everyone as it helped me with Globus within 4 days and I have been symtom free for two months after 2 different ENT doctors said it was my GERD.  A new internal medicine doctor diagnois me before he ever looked at my throat after he heard my story.  HE KNEW what it was and how to treat it with valium. Valium relaxes the muscles in the throat.  He explained that basically you/we are having cramps or muscle spasms in the throat.  Now I'm sure everyone has a little bit magnitude of symtoms but if you are a long sufferer and tried many other things valium is worth a try.  I only had to take 4 days worth of pills (8 pills of the 20 that were prescribed.  The doctor said it could come back, BUT we could just retreat with a few pills.  I would love to know if this helps anyone!
