Unpleasant side effects from iron supplements.

Posted , 4 users are following.

I recently had a blood test done and find that my haemoglobin levels are a bit low and have been prescribed iron supplements to correct this.

The pills are 66mcg and I am supposed to take 3 per day. I started suffering from diarrhoea and stomach cramps and am worried about being too far from a toilet.

I cut down the dosage to 2 a day but still have the same problem.

Is anyone else taking these supplements and how are you coping?

I'm due for a second hip replacement in August and want to make sure I'm medically sound.

Sounds awful, gwen! Perhaps you could discontinue them altogether and make sure you eat lots of foods rich in iron instead. I'd check with whoever told you to take them and get his take on it. It can't be good for you having the diarrhea and cramps.

I think that's a better idea. I will make a conscious effort to change my diet a bit.

I'm going away this weekend so I think it will be a good time to stop taking them anyway 😕

A friend of mine had trouble taking iron supplements while pregnant and her doctor suggested taking children's vitamins plus iron. Don't know if this would help you or not but it worked for her. Good luck!

    Hi Gwen

Im a nurse and this is a well known side effect of iron tablets unfortunately - see the patient info leaflet in the box . Youve been prescribed them so you do need them so shouldnt substitute anything over the counter instead. If the side effects are really bad then call your GP - he may be able to prescribe a slightly different format or something else which will counteract the side effects . You need your blood levels to be right for your next op. Good luck hon xx
