Unsure

I have type 1 genitals and since yesterday I had sores in my gums. Is that an outbreak or could it just be canker sores? I thought cold sore only come out around the lips.

I'm not sure if I'm having an outbreak, I been taking valacyclovir once a day for the past five days, should that prevent any outbreaks?

Usually cold sores appear around the margins of the lips, and canker sores can occur on the gums, so it could well just be that. The meds *should* prevent an outbreak wherever, but sometimes outbreaks can still occur. Just keep up with the meds and maybe gargle with salt water or apply Bonjela. smile

      Thank you for replying.

I'm going to continue with the meds and hope it doesn't last long and don't come back.

Do you think if I continue the meds and the sores don't go away will mean that they are canker sores?

Canker sores usually heal in a few days, and so do breakthrough lesions with meds, I believe, so hard to say, but given their location, it's unlikely herpes, unless they recur at or near the same place, then possibly. Mostly the lips, however.

Apparently oral herpes can occur inside the mouth, although that's not the norm. Just replied to a guy who appears to be having an outbreak on his tongue! I read something that said canker sores heal leaving no mark, whereas herpes tends to leave a discoloured mark that then fades, otherwise they look the same. Not sure if that's a definite thing or particularly helpful, but thought I'd mention it. How are the gum ulcers now?

      Thanks for the info.

They are getting better but I stil have one that's white in the middle and red around and that's the one that bothers me the most.

It might sound a little painfull, but perfume is really good for cold sores. I dont know if anyone has tried it on hv but I suggest its worth a try if you havnt got anything more suitable.
