I am about to have surgery but am extremely worried now having read how many people have suffered long term after surgery. I am opening my own beauty salon in about five weeks and thought I would be recovered in time now I'm wondering if I should cancel operation .Am I right to think this i just don't know what to do my surgeon has said because the nerve has been compressed for so long four years infact the operation might not work . I can't afford to not work for a long period of time hence me putting it off for so long

Hello Lindsay!
Well, to begin with: without the operation, how long would it take for you to recover then?
Answer: never.
I had my operation done six months after I got cts. Today, if I could have turned the clock back and made a choice, I would have done it within the first month or so. The sooner the better I would say.
Simultaneously, don't only think of how long you've had cts. More important is how compressed the nerve is. The median nerve can even get more damaged within minutes compared to someone who got it (slightly) compressed for several years. It's a combination of degree and time.
So, how did you get it is the most important question here.
Have you tried those things to wear at night around your hands so not to move the hands too much up and down and to avoid to keep the hand/s under the pillow or in any other uncomfortable, unhealthy position/s?
If not, try them during night while you wait for the operation. Have it done, avoid to keep your hands down after surgery for 2-3 weeks. Start using the hands as much as possible without overdoing it, from day 2 and forward: if not your surgeon says otherwise!
Be ready for your own business within one month. I' m in a similar position by the way: a publishing company.
Good Luck!!

Hi Ken
Thank you for your positive feedback I think it's what I needed . I have been using a sling the last couple of weeks and I do feel better for doing so.

Hello Lindsay!
I'm from Sweden, so ... what is a sling?
Do you mean a hard wrist protection thing, so you aren't able to bend your hands at night. That's the one I meant you should try. My physiotherapist said in some cases these would be enough, wait out the result after using them for 3 weeks-1 month maximum. But, my surgeon thought those things were just stupid to wear at all. However, I got better using them, but not all the way, so ...
I had the operation done about four years ago and most of the time nowadays I feel 90-100 recovered. I notice what I can't do nomore, like bending my wrist for too long or typing on a standard laptop or playing playstation. Using an ergonomic keyboard, make sure I use my hands regularly in different positions and activities, not static for longer periods and not too heavy carrying makes my hand useable and not painful or numb. At all.

Hi Lindsay61719
Had my surgery on the right hand 5 weeks ago. I wish now I had looked online for alternative remedies. I type for a living and went back after 3 weeks. I have a strong pain threshold, but I am regretting having the surgery. Yes my tingling and pins and needles has gone. But I am in more discomfort then ever around my wrist, I am having physio. I am not sleeping, my wrist is swollen, the scar tissue is healing well. But if I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn'tof had it done. If you opening your own business in 5 weeks I would say don't do it.
I am struggling big time, just trying to be honest.
Good luck
Lorraine
