Update on hip

hi fellow hippies
i had my left hip replaced May 30 stem moved a bit but since it has stayed stable and everything is healing as it should. Went to see surgeon on Friday and he told me he was pleased with my progress although I'm still using a cane. I've been doing physio once a week and home exercises every day. Next week is my last outside physio but I will continue the exercises at home.
i asked the surgeon if the pain and aches I was having in my right leg was from exercises or arthritis I also told him about the crunches I feel in that leg. He sent me back for X-ray and confirmed I have arthritis in my right hip that is already bone on bone. No wonder I've been having so much pain. No wonder my progress to walking without cane is slow. Pain is holding me back.
i have to see him in four weeks but at least I won't have to wait months to see him like the last time. I will have to wait a long time for surgery as wait times here in Ontario Canada are quite long.
i hate the idea of going through all this again but know there will be no pain after my next surgery. Well unless my knees need replacing too! I pray that will not be the case.
i feel bad that my wonderful granddaughter will have to be tied down for another six to eight weeks driving me to physio, dr appointments, doing groceries, etc. But she says she doesn't mind. I'm 78 and live alone so need her help.
All this when I finally can drive myself now and some of those 90 degree restrictions have been relaxed (posterior surgery) I've got to start all over again. At least I know what to expect now and have all the necessary equipment to help me.
ill post again after my next visit to the surgeon, hope I can get a surgery date soon.
good luck to all recovering hippies.

Ginny,
I now have both hips now replaced. I'm glad you will be having your other hip done & then will be pain free! You're fortunate to have your granddaughter to help you.
Take care Vickie

dear ginny,
awwww.... that is disappointing, isn't it ? at least you know the reason ...
I went through the same thing -- Right hip surgery went well for the first 3-4 weeks and then took a turn -- groin pain lead me to this forum (yeah!!!) and at 6 weeks follow up appointment, left hip showed bone-on-bone from mild in 6 months -
It really slows down the healing process and my new hip had to take on support too early --- 6 months later my left hip got done, so to speak -
No, definitely not fun and something to look forward to - however, you have been through it before and that is a comfort and scary at the same time -
You are blessed with having your granddaughter to help you -
I hope you get a surgery date soon too Ginny - in the mean time, come here any time -
I though I was a freak and a loser but all I got here was support and understanding and how "normal" this is ... who knew ???
thinking of you
big warm hug

hi renee
yes, I am very disappointed. I know we are not supposed to compare ourselves with others but that really can't be helped. The woman who was in the same room at the hospital, had surgery same day by same surgeon is up and about, driving, no cane or other aides and she is two years older than me and lives alone too. I know, I know don't do that comparison but I'm human and can't help it.
its getting harder to do all the exercises because of the pain in the unoperated right leg, however I have to do them so muscles will get stronger in advance of the next surgery.
oh well, life goes on.
thanks so much Renee for your support and thanks to everyone on this forum for your inspiring stories too.

of course we DO compare eventhough we know we shouldn't ... nature of the beast, so to speak -
Spoiler alert !!!!! YOU CANNOT COMPARE YOUR OWN SURGERIES TO EACH OTHER -
My surgeon told me that and of course I did ... it is different ...
but it is okay, Ginny ... just want to remind you (and everyone else here) to be kind and gentle with your selves ... your body went through a lot and needs time to recover from the traumatic experience - in most cases a joint was forcefully removed and your body needs to process this loss - then some piece of hardware was put in and again your body needs time to accept and adept to it .
Do your exercises the best you can - don't get upset - when you do or are in pain, your body and muscles tense up, making your body rigid -
Oh Ginny, I felt sooooooo old -
soon you will have two new hips !!!!
I wish I had paid more attention to my upper body !!!
