Hey all just wanted to give you all an update, well my doctors 1st referral got rejected, but thankfully his 2nd referral went through and hasn’t been rejected,I received a letter today in the post, confirming that I’ve been booked an appointment to see and speak to a general surgeon specialist on 24th November, because of being rejected 1st time round,I rang the number on the letter, they’ve confirmed my appointment, they told me that I’ll only be talking to the surgeon, and may have to have blood tests, and want to make sure  I’m healthy to have the surgery, they also said that it will probably be after Christmas I’ll get my surgery done,be a miracle if it’s done before Christmas, can anyone tell me what to expect on my appointment please

Your surgeon should go over the pros and cons of having the surgery versus not having the surgery. The main consequence of not having the surgery is having a strangulated hernia. Also they should tell you what to do should your symptoms worsen.

Your surgeon should also describe the surgical procedure that will be used, the type of anesthesia to be used, and whether or not mesh will be used.

For your planning purposes, ask if you will need someone to drive you home after discharge which is likely. And ask how long the surgery will take, and approximately how long after surgery will discharge typically occur.

You should ask about the recovery time and any physical restrictions during recovery (usually don't lift anything over ten pounds).

Also ask about what pain medication will be prescribed. If there is a particular pain med that works best for you, let your surgeon know, and it will likely be prescribed.

Also ask about how many days after the surgery will the follow-up appointment be scheduled.

Also there are many websites that provide detailed descriptions of what to expect both pre-op and post-op. Just Google the type of hernia repair you will have and either pre operation or post op, or recovery.

I had laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia repair with mesh with no complications and a short two week recovery.

    Good luck

Your appointment will include a medical history, a physical examination to include your current problem along with vital signs.  I would think the visit would also include scheduling you for a CT scan depending on type of hernia. It should also include obtaining blood work and an EKG all prior to surgery. This is the time to ask all your questions from a prepared list. Make sure you get answers you fully understand. Take someone with you who can help you remember and/ or take notes. You will also probably sign a release form or consent form agreeing to the surgery and understanding the risks involved...... as there always are with any surgical procedure.

    All the best!

They will take blood pressure, check your heart and general health to make sure your fit eneough for surgery. They asked me if I was alergic to anything, had any loose teeth and checked mŷ weight. I also had to have my BMI checked and sign to agree to surgery. Nothing really scary though you’ll be fine

    Hi Jenny!

I saw that you had a small umbilical hernia, I did too and got it repaired 8 days ago as well as having my gall bladder removed. I would asked the surgeon if they are planning on using mesh and if they have too. I did not have mesh and have had a pretty fast recovery. Although my hernia was small it was causing me so much pain! So I hope you can have surgery soon! I'm so glad I did it. I was really scared too and things went great. Good luck!
