Yep my scar from TKR is not like a roman road, more a twisty country lane!
Just thought I'd share that! 😄
Happy Christmas to all in 'knee land'

In Aug my wife took one of her frequent Parkinson's related falls and broke her hip requiring a partial hip replacement. She keeps asking me about her scar which, in comparison to mine, is so small. I finally asked her if at age 79 she was going to don a new bikini and head for the beach on her walker. Her comments were less than lady like, especially for her but she finally got the message......the scar is the least important part of the recovery......its what's underneath that's important. After my two bouts with staph and having to have the knee opened twice.........the second time resulted in complete removal of the prosthesis for 4 months and antibiotic infusion twice a day for 8 week she probably feels she needs to be reassured she's o.k. .......which she is. My surgeon has repeatedly told me he hated to leave a scar like that but with all that he has had to remove there wasn't much choice. I have a rare tumor that started all this and unfortunately they can't get it all even if I were to undergo radiation again........which I won't. I turn 80 in Feb so I'm hoping it will grow slowly and I'll leave it in the crematorium as that's about the only option. I don't get overly concerned but do have to stay upright and mobile as long as possible as I am my wife's caregiver and her condition continues to deteriorate with dementia now entering the picture.
I just try and keep a sense of humor and be thankful all this crap didn't get dumped on us when we were in our 50's.
You just have to be flexible and realize you may get back to normal but its just a new normal.
Merry Christmas and remember you now got a leg up, so to speak, on being rarein' and tearin' by warm weather..........unless you are in Australia and its already summer.

A couple of decades later the arthoscopic thing became the fad and yup...they added several inch long incisions to the drawing.
Next, the did the tkr incision that begins way up my femur and extends to within 8 inches of my ankle..
not a Roman road, not a twisty country lane...more like drove off of a high cliff....

April, so happy things ar progressing well. My biggest fear is having a revision but
if you do, you do, I guess not much you can do about it. The good thing is you know what to expect and the right questions to ask etc. When was your 1st TKA ? I always ask this question, were you allergy tested? I am allergic to nickle and bone cement and from what I've read many revisions are done because of loosening of hardware or constant pain etc. Fortunately, I have a nickle-free prosthetic but they were forced to use bone cement. I hope you continue to do well and you hsvr s positive outcome this time. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
