Upped dose on Citalopram and having unbearable anxiety panics and suicidal thoughts

Hi everyone,

This is the first time I've posted on a forum for support, so i do hope it will help. i had a recent relapse of high anxiety and panic attacks. I had been coming off Citalopram and was on 10mg per day, but the symptoms got so bad that the GP recommended i upped my dose to 20mg. I did so but things didn't get better. I had to stop work as i wasn't sleeping and was having panic attacks quite frequently and went to stay with my parents so i could be looker after. after 4 weeks i was noticing improvements but then i went. back to my flat in london for a week and felt worse again, so doctor upped my citalopram dose to 30mg. that was a week ago. for the past few days I've had unbearable anxiety and panic constantly, feeling so much pent up hurt and anger and wanting to scream but not knowing how to let it out. and I'm feeling suicidal as its constant and there doesn't appear to be any escape.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? there's a part of me that feels like I'm going mad and can't see a way out of this torture. any help or suggestions appreciated!

    Hi ChrisAld,

We note from a recent post which you have made to our forum that you may be experiencing thoughts around self-harm. If we have misinterpreted your comments then we apologise for contacting you directly. But if you are having such thoughts then please note that you are not alone in this, and there are people out there that can help.

If you are having these suicidal thoughts then we strongly recommend you speak to someone who may be able to help. The Samaritans offer a safe space where you can talk openly about what you are going through. They can help you explore your options, understand your problems better, or just be there to listen.

Their contact details are on our patient information leaflet here: https://patient.info/health/dealing-with-suicidal-thoughts, which also offers lots of other advice on how you can access the help you may need.

If you are having such thoughts then please do reach out to the team at the Samaritans (or the other people detailed in our leaflet) who will understand what you're going through and will be able to help.

      Hi chris

The symptoms you are feeling are some of the harsher side effects and definitely shouldnt be ignored. Contact your gp again to re loom at the dose you are on. These feelings you are feeling are probably very overwhelming at the moment, but they are not you, they are the medication and will go away. You won't feel like this forever, but I. Definitely think maybe reducing back to 20mg is a good choice and giving that dose time to settle into your system.
