Upper back pain is not uncommon when suffering acid reflux/heartburn. When the acid in the stomach backs up it flows into the esophagus. It is highly acidic and irritating (in more ways than one) to the tissues surrounding it. Unfortunately there just so happens to be a lot of nerve fibres in this general area which get inflamed. These irritated nerves are what give you your upper back pain. The only way to deal with the pain is to deal with the original cause-the heart burn. See your doctor and try to get the heart burn under control and the upper back pain should also disappear.

    Hi Sebstar.

    Welcome to the site.

Yes I get pain in my upper back with painful acid reflux. Have had various drugs from my GP such as Lansoprazole, Omeprazole, Gaviscon Advance etc. most of which are ineffective after a short while. I am now trying different diets, such as non-citrus fruits and natural bran cereal, leaving alone things that start it off such as tomatoes and so far, touch wood, the attacks have lessened. Some people find Probiotics a help.

    Regards, Val.

Oh my eff my back is on fire right now!! I'll rarely get heartburn, but man when I do it hurts worse than child birth! And I've been told by many doctors that my tolerance for pain is quite high. I wonder why my heartburn pain is so intense? Uuugh this is miserable!

      Hi Shelbie

What does your back pain feel like?  Does it feel like a sharp muscular stab pain but the pain does not exist when you move?  I have been dealing with this for 4 years and I keep getting sent to another doctor as they tell me it’s a back problem. Mine starts with a lump in my throat then severe burning and then all the sudden I get these stabbing back pains. Like someone is taking an ice pick and just doing little stabs. It might be a nerve pain but again when I work out or am moving I don’t feel that pain. When the throat pain gets bad the back pain comes on. Can you relate to this?  I am so tired of it and wish I could find a fix. Nexium helps but only until about 3 or 4 pm. Then throat pain comes along with back pain. Ugh. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, yes I do! The pain starts in my throat area on the right side and then moved to my upper back between my right shoulder blade and it’s so painful, it’s always at night too or right after a heavy meal. I’ve been worried that the right upper back pain has been something to do with my liver as I was recently told I have a fatty liver. So I’m glad to hear upper back pain is not uncommon with acid reflux but it kills!!

Hi Mel - I have been told I have slight fatty liver.  I have silent reflux/GERD and mine will also start in the throat (right side) then move into my back - very painful it is.  Catches my breath.  Just got to live with it I spose sad

I recently had what is called autonomous transplant which is a treatments for Myloma and it started ! that is a terrible pain between my shoulder blades and lower. Difficult to describe its like multiple small burns “ invading “ the area. Now thanks to this Blog I know it is GERD ! I had mentioned it to my doctors but they said it could be some reaction to my treatment but did not suggest GERD. Lately it had mostly subsided till tonight when it woke me up ! that’s when I started scouring the Web for explanation ! I am so glad I discovered patient info because I know discover it’s the late, spicy meal I had ! I am on omaprazole as probably indigestion  is expected from my treatment . Thank you all for various experiences of this indescribable pain at least I am not as scared as I know what it is !
