Upper left side pain

Hi all,

For the past 6 months or so, I've been suffering with a pain in my left side, just under the rib cage. It almost feels like there's a build up of pressure.

This only affects me in the morning or during the night when I awaken from sleep. The pain will go within 10 minutes of getting up out if bed and going about my day.

Does anyone have any insight into what this could be? I do suffer with gas and constipation as a result of IBS. I'm hoping that it's just a result of that.

I'd rate the pain 2/10.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

I recently had a really bad time with pain under the ribs 9/10 scale and was quite breathless. Did some research and found that when reflux of acid is particularly bad it makes the veins in the airways swell up. I have a hiatus hernia and my reflux smelled of faeces for eight years. I just recently got on top of that with diet, but I made the mistake of eating too much tomato over a few weeks and thought I was in real trouble, but by talking indignation liquid and tablets every few hours and a more alkaline diet (chicken soup) and the pain has died down and my tummy is almost pain free. Hope this helps.

I do not have this hernia etc but just wanted to say great biological knowledge and this is the sort of knowledge we need as we all know what happens when we have a flare up/attack but I am sure very few understand what happens within outer bodies. My mother wanted me to study medicine and I really should have listened.

    Hi

I have this and I just thought it was Ibs related.

After a few weeks I went to the doctor, they said it was costochondritis, my doctor sent me for an X-ray to make sure it was nothing else.

Look it up and see what you think

      Thank you for your reply.

The pain im experiencing is below the left rib cage so I'm not sure if this could be a possibility.

It is worse if I'm lying on my left side however.

It sounds like it may be what I have, mine started on the right side, now I get it both sides.

Look it up on patient Uk, see if it sounds like what you have.

Get your doctor to check it out.

Let me know how you get on.

I have had costochondritis and it is agony.  I thought it was a pulled muscle but it went on for three months so I went to the doctor who diagnosed costochondritis without any tests.  It can be caused by stress.

      Hi Phillipa

It is painful, I thought I had a cracked rib.

Some days it is ok, and then it starts again.

I was told by the doctor to to take nurofen for the pain and wait it out.  She advised me the pain would be gone after three months and it did.

I get that but the pain is more 7/10 sometimes increasing to 10/10 but the latter denotes an attack is imminent.  I do not get the pain daily so more intermittent for me. I was in A+E recently and had this whilst sat waiting which was fun. I just had to rub my stomach for about 30 mins which settled it.

You can have pains just about anywhere with IBS.  I have left and right sided pain, in the middle, back and ribs.
