Upping mirtazapine independantly

Posted , 3 users are following.

Has anyone upped their dose without Drs okay?  I started on 30mg and the upped to 45mg and had a hideous CMT assessment yesterday and then I've got to wait weeks for it to be discussed at the team meeting and I expect then it will be weeks before I hear anything, so I'm thinking of upping the Mirt to 60mg myself.  The mirt seems to help me sleep sometimes but only helps with mood after an increase so this is my logic.  I feel dreadful after the assessment and full ol shame and I really dont know how much lower I can sink, and then they are going to discuss me in front of loads in this meeting!

    Hi Rachel,

It is best to have medical supervision when upping doses. Reducing doses without consulting your doctor are fine for most as long as they are tapered. I certainly wouldn't up your dose to 60mg as 45mg is the maximum!

Mirtazapine needs to be given time anyway - how long have you been taking it? Bear in mind that meds are usually not a cure, they just help to ease symptoms for most. Have you tried counselling, meditation, regular exercise or other self help measures?

    Wishing you well.

I agree with Robert; the max dose of Mirt is 45mg.  I understand wanting to increase as you say this is the only time you feel any benefit but this can't go on indefinately afterall can it.

Then there's the issue of tapering one day, and the higher we go the harder it is.  If 30 or 45 mg hasn't helped you maybe Mirt isn't the right AD for you?

    Wishing you well.

Thanks both. I was being irrational sorry but I've actually been referred to crisis team now and hopefully they are going to review meds on Monday.
