urethral dilatation and incontinence

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi,

I have had urethral dilatation in October this year due to a narrow urethra causing persistent urine infections . Following this operation my incontinence has become far worse.I always suffered from urgency which the surgeon assured me would improve following the op ( which it hasn't) but now I suffer from stress incontinence also and leak when laughing & coughing etc.Has this happend to anyone else??.It is making me so depressed I have stopped going out.

Sorry to hear your experience has been a bad one, as it is for some  others following surgery, l immediately started with intersticitial cystitus following major surgery, some of us are unlucky, but its not long since you had dilation, maybe time will improve it.

l have seen other posts on here about people who have had bad experiences with dilation, someone in the know will probably pick up on it with more info than l have. Make sure you let the gp urologist know the after affects, whether they can help or not, at least its on record.  Hope someone can advice you, best wishes.

I know it can happen though rarely. I didn't have any problem after and nor did anyone else I know who had it done. It is quite possible that the operation irritated the bladder and will settle down, equally you may have a small infection or something else entirely.

Speak to your GP about what is happening, they may wish to let your surgeon know and if you have a follow up appt mention it to the surgeon then.

      Thankyou Taz

I have a follow up appointment so hopefully will get some answers.I had cancelled the OP 4 years ago as I was told this could happen but after so many infections since then, I really had no choice than to go through with it . incontinence has ruined my life since I was a child and I am gutted it has got worse.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply x

Our internal organs do not like being fiddled with and can react by going on strike or having a tantrum and becoming overactive.

(My sister has also had continance problems since childhood as the muscles that control the bladder ceased developing when she was 5 or 6.)

I had a cyst pressing on my bladder which caused incontinence. It was removed two months ago and things were worse after but are now getting better.

I am pleased things are getting better for you and hopefully continue to do so and the outcome for your sister is now good.

      Take care xx

Really hope it works out well for you too as I've seen first hand how confidence sapping and miserable it can be
