Urethritis and balanitis but no infection...

Hi,

I'm currently seeking help and advise on a health problem that is making me tired of the situation.

I'm a 35 year old guy and at the end of August 2019, I had sex with a lady that I don't know (one night stand after a bar pick-up).

The intercourse was fully protected (both when I received oral sex and when I penetrated her). I've always been super cautious when it comes to sex and never had unprotected sex.

I have no memories that something went wrong with the condom.

Three days afterwards, I started feeling that my urethra was tingling a bit and that alerted me.

After 15 days, it felt worse but not painful and I went to see a doctor who tested me with a urinary strip which showed no infection and sent me to a lab for testing :

HIV negative

Syphilis negative

Hepatitis A, B and C all negative

PCR gonorrhea on urine negative

PCR chlamydiae on urine negative

Urinary analysis negative

Then I waited for another 4 weeks so HIV and Syphilis results would be more accurate and definitive.

Still negative 6 weeks after the intercourse so I've ruled that out even though urethritis isn't a sign of those two diseases and I have no chancre on my penis.

By October 2019, the stings kept on and my glans started to peel off but with no pain.

A GP advised me to use Amycor as she thought it could be thrush. I did for 10 days as stated on the prescription and saw no improvement.

I saw a urologist early November 2019 who sent me back to the lab for two swab tests as she suspected I could have funghi inside the urethra and she wanted to confirm other potential STIs after looking at my penis saying that there was visually nothing:

PCR gonorrhea on swab negative

PCR chlamydiae on swab negative

PCR mycoplasma genitalium on swab negative

PCR Trichomas on swab negative

The stinging died down in December 2019 and only my glans was still peeling at times but without any other signs. I thought it was over.

But at the end of December 2019 I started feeling burning sensations on the tip of the glans which led me to a new urologist who looked at my penis as well and said that the peeling off was abnormal and that I should use Dakin bath twice a day and Amycor for 3 weeks. I did all of that throughout January 2020.

Then when I stopped my glans peeled off like it had never done it for 7 days in a row with a burning sensation that came and went during the day. Then I was sent to the lab again to get my glans swabbed for both funghi and bacteria. And guess what? It came back negative... even after cultures were made.

So now I'm left with a glans that keeps peeling off and burning everyday along with tingling in my urethra.

I have no idea what's responsible for that if everything comes back negative (they also ran cultures everytime I went to the lab to look for other potential bacteria and viruses).

I'm lost and it starts affecting my life and my happiness for the first time after 6 months of wandering in "you have nothing to worry about sir" world.

Any idea what this could be? Knowing that I've been inspecting my penis a lot since it started and can have contaminated it.

Thanks

Laurent

Hey there, I just saw the third urologist recently who specializes in idopathic UTI and he too said "nothing to worry." We may not have the same symptoms exactly but the tip of my penis is reddish/ inflamed, and the urethra glues together a few hours of not peeing. Pressing for a gram stain swab etc. from the infectious diseases department of a local research hospital. But it may just be something I have to live with. Thanks for posting please keep us updated!

Hey Dave, nice to hear your feedback although I wish you didn't have to be on this forum as well 😃

The tip of my penis (meatus) is reddish and inflamed but it's been like that for ten years now although it seems to be more affected by the condition.

I'll see a dermatologist on Monday as they also specialise in that kind of skin problems. Let me know what the swab stain will find.

Was it also after sex that your symptoms started ? And what are they exactly ?

Have a nice Friday evening Dave

So I went to see a dermatologist tonight who wasn't much worried about my glans. He said it might be eczema that's exacerbated by the fact that I've been inspecting my body over and over for the past 6 months.

No herpes, no germs he said by looking at it so I'm relieved I must say.

He also said that it can be psychologically induced as the penis can be a point of focus for men and... well yes, I might have had some sexual questioning before it all started.

So he prescribed Pevisone which is anti-fungal + cortisone.

      I'll see what it'll do.
