Urethroplasty Questions?

Posted , 3 users are following.

I am a 24 year old male and I have recently had a urethroplasty to fix a 4cm stricture in my bulbar urethra. I have a supra and urethral cathetar in place. I am exceptionally worried that this operation has not been a success and I have a number of questions that perhaps someone can help me with?

- I have a urine infection which I have received antibiotics for. I have noticed that there is quite a lot of yellowish discharge from my penis. Will a urine infection affect the graft in any way?

- I was worried my erections would be affected by the surgery however I was able to masturbate 3 times. However, I noticed after that the area under my scrotum feels a bit tight and sore. This is the same feeling I get whenever I have an erection. Is this due to the catherer or have I damaged the graft? I realise masturbating was stupid and I have stopped.

- I have another two weeks until I go for my dye test. As I am quite young and I keep myself in good shape and eat healthily, will my graft have healed quicker than the average time they say?

Any help or advice you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

I'm 57 and so far am not being lined up for urethroplasty, just urethrotomy. Urine infections are quite normal and the yellowish discharge is just part of that, I think. (I have just got over a urine infection which also produced cloudy yellowish discharge in my urine.)

The area under your scrotum that hurts is the area where you've had the urethroplasty, the bulbar urethra, so I should think it's perfectly natural for it to hurt.

If you have a fitted urethral catheter then the urethra should be protected from any infected urine, which will surely just be passing through the tube, not touching the urethra? So no, I wouldn't think the infection will affect the graft. Masturbating on the other hand, with a catheter present, is bound to irritate things. There's not much you can do about erections when they occur, but I wouldn't encourage them! Now that you know you can still get them, leave it alone until you are safe to enjoy them.

Do you have any reasons for thinking the op hasn't been a success? You are, as you say, young and healthy. You're bound to worry about an op involving your penis - what man wouldn't worry about his manhood - but it's fair to assume that your surgeon knew what he was doing and that you are not the first guy he's operated on. You are probably much more impatient to get on with life again than I aged 57 would be! And I'm sure you will heal faster and be back in circulation that I would.

    Good luck!

      Hi Colin,

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

The urine infection has gone after my 4th set of antibiotics, but I still have yellow discharge from my penis. I have my dye test this Friday so I am keeping my fingers crossed that this operation has been a success and I can get this catheters out.

The reason I think the operation has not succeeded is the fact I have a small lump/ridge at the base of my scrotum along my perenial. Its only along the left hand side of the catherer tube. I have tried looking it up but there is no information on the internet so i have booked a doctors appointment tomorrow to see if I can get a urology appointment before Friday.

I am usually an optimistic person, but its hard to be optimistic when your health is involved.

I should also mention that bowel movements are quite sore and there was previously blood in my stool. This has cleared up the last few days but I am worried I have a Perineal Abscess.

Hmm, one would think that the bowel problems were quite separate from the urethral ones. If there is bladder pain with a bowel movement, maybe the movement of the bowel muscles is disturbing inflammation around a bladder infection? I'm guessing only, and I hope your doctor has been helpful in getting you a urology appointment.

As for the yellowish discharge, if it's the same as mine then my uruologist suggested that it was quite normal, and the only reason you're noticing it is because it isn't being flushed out of the urethra with urine as usual.

Did you masturbated while having a supra and urethral catethers? Wasn't it risky?
