urge to urinate (6 years)

Ive had this pressing urge to urinate for many years now. Its absolutely soul destroying. I break down. I cry. I don't want to be here anymore.

Ive had urine tests, ultrasounds, the camera, my bladder filled, many medications and nothing can be found & nothing changes.

I do dip sticks every day (multiple times) in hope that a UTI may finally emerge. Nothing. I have swabbed my vagina with the UTI sticks and it shows blood & protein but i dont think you should use them for that.

I have the urge & occasionally pressure that feels like I might pop. Its continuous - never goes. I never get a break from this its ruining my life. Ive looked into interstitial cystitis and that looks like it may be it. That would be a death sentece as ive tried the medication route already and it doesnf work. I tried the diet also. Doesnt work.

I really am at the end of my tether now. I used to scream and jump around with anger because of it all. Its way past that now I just pleed for something to change. I honestly do wish for death. That may seem a bit dramatic but try to imagine being BUSTING for the toilet 24/7 and when you do go...theres still no relief. I don't know what to do.

Ive been to the GP umpteen times. Shes put me on cimetidine for 4 weeks and then I have to go back again. Probably be sent to a urologist again. Have another ultrasound and then be sent away again. This whole rigmarole is just getting on top of me. One urologist actually told me it was all in my head. Ive seen 2 gyno's, 2 urologists and about 8 GPs.

Can't say that I know what you are going through , I can say that one dr said I had OVAB and gave me meds that didn't work . It wasn't until I switched doctors who said you have had 3 kids , you have your bladder falling some. You need surgery. Simple .

Sounds like intersticial cystitus, which l have, for me there was frequency but also pain with it, and scope did diagnose it, l guess youve had cystascope, but its not impossible for it to be not picked up on, for some with it they dont get much pain from inflammation,  but serious frequency, half hourly, often due to their bladder shrinking due to scar tissue, did they say if your bladder is normal size and what capacity it holds.Have the docs suggested or tried you on amitriptylene, commonly used for frequency, it calms nerve endings and reduces frequency, or supposed to, and you only need small dose 5-10 for bladder problems.

l was also prescribed cimetidine by urologist, a histamine receptor, when the bladder is producing too much histamine. Before l got diagnosis the constant frequency and pain, the dragging sensation, used to send me mad also, fury with it.  l was at least lucky that l did respond to meds and 90percent improved. l have a friend from c.o.b group who didnt respond to meds, and last resort for her and its only rarely done and she,d to fight for it, as its radical, but she did have a urostomy, a bag, some do when nothing else works over many years of suffering and getting as low as you are with it. Check out c.o.b site as theyve a lot more info and advice, which might help you, l think they even provide phone no,s of specials urologists who can advice. l,d also say keep at your gps, and dont give up hope, often takes a long time for some to get diagnoses and treatment, take care.

Hi lynne. Thank you so much for replying. I am currently on amitriptlyine (sp?) At a night time which is supposed to help me sleep but it just makes me groggy.

I had my bladder filled and the uro told me it was all in my head because my bladder held a "normal" amount. I can hold it in but the sensation to go pee never goes away.

Oh, just saw this post too, be careful if your GP puts you on Tolterodine as it interacts with Amitriptyline to give very weak urine stream.   I was on 50mg Ami for pain relief and my urine stream improved significantly when I came off this.

I know this feeling very well and had the pressure and urge to pee very frequently both night and day for about 2 years.   I also have pain every time my bladder fills though recent cystoscopy with distention was inconclusive for interstitial cystitis.   My GP put me on Tolterodine last December and it has been great for the urge/frequency and got it back to normal, but the pain hasn't gone away and just lasts for longer now.  I guess with these bladder conditions you have to find what works for you.   I found a really good Guide to Chronic Pelvic Pain produced by the European Urology Association in 2012, it quite medically technical but does offer some good direction on which treatments work depending on symptoms for both pain and urge/ frequency and also what happened in different studies, the Cystitis and Overactive Bladder Foundation web-site also has useful information as does the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.   I am undiagnosed after 3 years so understand where you're at.

Also twiglet. How long did it take for your medication to make a difference? Xx

It was a couple of weeks.  Initially started on 1mg twice per day but when I went up to 2mg twice per day the urgency/ frequency quickly reduced to normal.
