urgent advice needed (pip denied for my daughter)

hello, i could really do with some advice as the cab along with others havent been as helpful as id have hoped, a few months back my daughter reported a change in circumstances in regards to her mental health conditions long story short the medication she was on when she initially claimed ended up having adverse reactions making her even worse so medications were changed and we were advised to report the changes assuming we would be entitled to more help, originally she was awarded standard care dla for 10 years. she suffers with borderline personality disorder, agoraphobia with panic disorder and manic depression she is unable to leave the house without myself as she does not understand the context of what people are saying making her sadly a threat to herself and others, she struggles daily with trying to control her thoughts and moods, a very long history of self harm and suicide attempts and she dosent eat so without me preparing meals she would not eat she require my supervision 24/7. on the 14th of december she recieved a letter saying she was no longer entitled to pip and the money has been stopped she scored 4 on the whole assesment, unfortunatly she found the letter before i did and ended up in hospital later on that night from an overdose she left a letter telling me that without the help of pip she couldnt survive so had no option. i really would like advice on if i should try to get a reconsideration for her, it is asking the impossible for her to leave her bedroom so finding work is out of the question. are reconsiderations succesful in many cases? we currently have no financial help and really need help in regards to what we do now.

many thanks, Tracy

    Dear Tracy,

sorry to hear how bad your daughter is being treated. This really makes my blood boil the way in which they treat the sick and disabled, they think there is nothing wrong with us and should all be working. I also suffer with BPD and have had to go for private therapy because I couldn't get help on the NHS, I have had to pay out of the little bit of savings I had now that's all gone but I will have to find the money some how as I need the help. I wish your daughter all the best and do hope she gets the help she needs.

As I keep on saying, the DWP are not interested in what is wrong. They are only concerned if someone can prove that they fit one or more of the PIP descriptors that make up PIP.

As an example and on my mental health problems only, I suffer from PTSD, Depression, Anxiety (both linked directly to PTSD), early onset Dementia and a complete personality change/lost motor skills/inability to recognise shapes etc, brought about through frontal lobe damage (the brain was shunted forwards following severe trauma to the back of the head.  I have received Middle Care DLA since 1996 for this aspect alone. Looking at PIP, I cannot for the life of me and neither can my wife or daughters' find any box/descriptor that fits me. Hence why I am resigned to get no PIP award.

PIP is simply a cash saving exercise and has absolutely nothing to do with making sure that more disabled people are brought into the disability benefit system that DLA excluded. The opposite is true - they are trying to cut the DLA budget by 20%!!

This PIP form seems to have been designed in a way to stop people from getting the money they deserve. I don't know if you have tried contacting an advocate who is experienced  in dealing with people who have physical and mental disabilities, as they may be able to help you. If you want to find an advocate maybe try contacting Rethink/Mind these charities deal with mental health issues and might be able to help or if they can't help may know  the right people to put you in touch with. Another idea is to contact welfare rights. Hope you find the help you need.

      Kindest regards.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I agree, the PIP2 is a tad bit difficult for those that aren't 'benefit savvy' like me and thousands of others.

As for contacting organisations, been there and done that. CAB were too busy before Christmas and could only offer an appointment later this month. There isn't a Mind or Rethink locally - note within 25 miles at least. Welfare Rights at the council no longer exists. AgeUK do have an office locally but do not have anybody to help locally - South London is the nearest specialised benefit office they have (70 miles away).

There is just one place that would advocate (DIAL) but that is in Margate, 60 miles away.

I have been thinking hard over the Christmas period - do I really want to/could I cope with these PIP reassessments every few years until I peg it. My IIDB claim was bad enough - re-assessment every two years since 1996.

It seems that i may now have another problem - I asked for the form PIP1 as I did not want to start my PIP claim off over the telephone. It's now gone past the month allowed with no PIP1 being sent to me.

I've had enough - we will have to take the financial hit, sell the home to pull the equity out and rent as I just don't feel capable in looking forward to another couple of years of hell going through the Tribunal process.
