urinary and vaginal problems

Please can anyone help. i have a severe cancer phobia which I have tried very hard to control. The menopause has been hard. I have not had a period for 2 years. 3 weeks ago I had a UTI. I was given 3 days of antibiotics but went back after a week with continued symptoms. When tested thought there was no UTI. My GP suggested I try Replens which I have. the pain however got worse and I was sure UTI was back but no. This time I was given some oestrogen pessaries which she thought might help. So far they haven't and I am getting increasingly concerned. My general mood is very low, I cry at the drop of a hat and I feel exhausted. Not tired but like I can't put one foot in front of the other. I have the need to wee straight after I have passed urine and it doesn't go away. The pressure feels like it is just inside the vagina and is constant. Can anyone relate to this, had similar or offer advice. i feel like I'm going mad. Can this all be due to the menopause? Please can someone offer some help?

Get yourself some cranberry juice...the unsweetened kind that you find in the healthy part of the grocery store.  And look into "allergic bladder"

The cranberry juice will take away the painful symptoms.  And the bladder will most likely clear up on it's own if it is not an infection.  I know someone this happens to in the fall months...and there is even blood and protein in the urine when it happens, but it is never an infection.  We figure it is allergic bladder...and is caused most likely by a yeast overgrowth in the body (candida)  Once you get rid of the candida (google this) you will heal the bladder fully and not have any further issues

      HI

thanks for your reply. I have had a lot of thrush in the past and have actually just taken an oral thrush tablet today. A few years ago I had several UTI's ad there is always a small trace of blood in my urine. I had a cystoscopy and everything was clear. This has all come back with a vengeance though. What does interest me though is that I am also suffering from some kind of allergic reaction at the moment. I sneeze continually and my eyes are dry and itchy. I don't know if it could all be connected?

It's difficult to help without some additional information. Did your doctor do a culture to see what type of bacteria was causing the UTI?  A culture would have taken a couple of days to grow.  Or, did she just do a dip stick to diagnose?  If you were just handed 3 days of pills and symptoms returned, perhaps you weren't given enough of the appropriate antibiotic. Sometimes dip sticks won't properly diagnose a UTI.  It seems you still have UTI symptoms and your doctor is going through the motions. Your doctor is treating you for vaginitis, not for a UTI.

Cranberry juice can help.  I suggest you increase your intake of water to about 2 liters a day to clear out your urinary tract. Start taking a women's probiotic daily to achieve a better balance of bacteria in your vagina and urinary tract.  Hope this helps.  xx

Oestrogen pessaries (vagifem) didn't help my vaginal atrophy or urinary problems either - I had a bad reaction to them a swelled up so much inside, nothing could get in there! I live in the uk and here we have an oestrogen cream called ovestin which I get on very well with. It contains a bioidentical oestrogen called estriol which is considered a weak oestrogen but is also a protective oestrogen. It has been used in vaginal creams in Europe and Japan for some years and studies have shown that it has a protective function and actually protects against cancer and cardiovascular problems (which the other two oestrogen, estrodiol and estrone put you at risk of. Estriol is like the oestrogen that balances out the effects of the other two). Estriol is also very good as helping genitourinary problems.

I have found ovestin to be fantastic. My vagina is moist, plump, robust and elastic again (ovestin has given me a younger vag!).

Are you in the uk? I know others have said ovestin is not available in the US and if they want estriol they have to get it from a compounding pharmacy (whatever that is - we don't have those here). In the US you can get estrace cream which contains estrodiol.

As for the cancer fear, there are higher risk things for cancer such as being obese or smoking. I work in the field of dementia and getting dementia is a far greater likelihood than getting cancer and it is on the increase. 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. But now I have probably given you something else to worry about! My take on this is: enjoy life while you can and while you are still aware that you are enjoying it!

Thankyou for you reply. People have been really kind in responding. I have used  Vagifem for 3 nights now with no improvement. I am in the UK but didn't know about Ovisten. How long should I use it before I'd know if it was making any difference? I know this is a personal question but can I ask how you felt when you had urinary problems? As soon as I have been for a wee I need to go again. it feels like I have a football siting on my bladder. The urgency is also literally just inside the vagina, worse when I sit down. Does that suggest atrophy? I also had a my womb scarped in January for post menstrual bleeding because the lining was thin and dry. Are these connected do you know? I am sorry to ask so many questions

Oh, yes, and the probiotics and cranberry are also good suggestions. I take cranberry extract suppliments because all the juice in the supermarkets have sugar in which feeds the bacteria or yeast.

Hi As I just said to someone else people have been so kind in replying. Is the Estriol cream the Ovisten that someone else mentioned? is this better than  Vagifem do you know?

Ovestin contains estriol, the bioidentical oestrogen that actually protects against cancer and cardiovascular problems. It is only available in Europe and Japan. It is not available in the US. To get cream containing estriol you have to have it made up at a compounding pharmacy.

I’m going though the menopause and have had problems with UTI all the time. I feel like I need a wee all the time like you feels like something pressing down. I have been told I have too many white blood cells and protein in my urine which means there is blood in there. My doctor is on the case now so I will let you know what comes back.
