Urine infection

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had a urine infection for a few days. I have tried drinking loads but still not helping as it is getting worse. I have also taken cranberry capsules. I can't get to the doctors until Tuesday. Is there anything else I could take until I get there.

Have you been to a pharmacy to ask their advice linda because there are over the counter medications you can buy? It's a long time to wait until Tuesday.

    Hi Linda,

Is this something that effects you often or is this your first?

If it's your first then I would suggest you take Ural (which alkalises ur urine and takes the burn away) on a regular basis or Ureze tablets to take the pain away until you reach your doctor who will prescribe you anti biotics which will most likely kill the bacteria if this is your first. Or get to a quick bulk billing doctor who can give you the prescription quick to get rid of it in the same way. It's often best to get it done this way if it's your first. Keflex (Cephalexin) is a reliable antibiotic to do the job, rather than Cipro, which can do more harm than good.

    It probably won't resurface.

However, if this is one of many and won't go away (like me, I was getting them once a month for over a year) that's when you need to take it further with a more natural remedy. In this case I would suggest taking a bi carb soda tablet each day and some D-mannose which stops the bacteria sticking to the walls of your bladder, but you need to take a fair amount. I don't know your situation, but you can beat this !

Emma what is a quick bulk billing doctor? I haven't heard that phrase before and I've worked in the NHS for over 40 years.

Sorry I realise I'm Australian so I'm not sure what is available in the UK. I forget sometimes this sight is not Australian . I thought maybe you guys may have free clinic doctors (funded by government) where you can wait for ages for a quick diagnosis and quick script but I'm not sure. If there's no Ural In the UK there should atleast be a urine alkalising tablet such as a bi carb tablet or powder, and tablets to relieve the symptoms of Cystitis. But as for the antibiotics they should be the same in all nations . Here's hoping this helps

There are NHS walk in centres that are usually open 7 days a week usually for about 12-16 hours a day but not all areas have them. Our pharmacists are you excellent and patients are encouraged to ask their advice for ailments like urine infections for instance. There are some ladies from Australia on the forums but most are from the UK.

linda are you in the UK? If you are I don't think Ural and Ureze are available in the UK

Have you tried Boots cystitis powder (soluble in water)? It may at least relieve irritation until you can see a GP. I had doubts that it would work but it did help.

Try D-Mannose powder, it worked for me, along with at least 3L of water everyday. Do not take cranberry pills, worst thing you could ever do.

The over-the-counter Azo Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride 95 mg. for UTI pain are very helpful, although, if you allow the infection to advance untreated for several days the Azo tablets might not be strong enough. Untreated, the infection could also become something much more serious if it moves to your kidneys. Give great thought to going to the ER rather than spend days in pain and misery and perhaps having to be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics.

sandra are you in the UK because I was told this wasn't available over the counter anymore and you can only buy it online? I know Boots don't sell it or some other well known pharmacies.

No, I'm in the United States. How odd that they don't sell something so mild OTC. After all, it's only a dye pill which numbs the kidneys and bladder to help the pain of a UTI. Amazon sells it from the U.S. site, if that helps. Here in the U.S. we can also choose from many "store name" varieties of the same medication, just cheaper than the name brand.

We can't buy it in the UK and unfortunately that's where linda actually lives. I think some people post and not realise this website is in the UK although people do post from the US and Australia.

Does the UK have it available by prescription? I ask because Azo has only become an OTC thing in the U.S. within the last 5-6 years.

No it's not on prescription as far as I'm aware and I'm usually well clued up on pharmacy and over the counter drugs. I'm sure there is medication here that isn't available in the US but I can't actually think of any. The Department of Health and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence closely control what can and cannot be prescribed here in the UK.
