Urine infection is e-coli

Hi, has anybody been told that their urine infection is e-coli and may be very difficult to get rid of? I never had a consultation with GP just given a prescription and told I may need injections to get rid if it. I have suffered urine infections on and off for years but never like this. I have had high temp for over a year but not looked into. Only when cystitis started a few weeks ago and I took a sample in has it been looked into. First sample showed nothing at gp surgery so he said to do another one to be sent to lab. Just come back with this e-coli which has scared me a bit. I have lots of pain under my left rib and pelvic aches and pains but have had them for ages, could that be connected? He has given me Nitrofurantoin to take for a week but said it is very likely they won't clear it. What causes this? I am very careful with food and hygiene but do eat out a lot and used to buy ready made sandwiches a lot too, so could it be from that? I also have an auto immune disease and have suffered dreadful chest pain for a long time. Could this have been around for a lot longer and I haveen't known about it?

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello sandy. E-coli is one of the most common organisms found in urine and it usually clears up with oral antibiotics. It's not caused by anything you eat but mostly by wiping yourself from back to front rather front to back. Speak to your GP and ask for an explanation. It could be due to your auto immune disease

Sorry to mention that wiping bit! Well hopefully the antibiotics will work. Not very nice having injections but I suppose it's better than being very I'll. Fingers crossed.

If it continues ask to see a urologist. You may need further tests.

    Hi sandy67,

I posted an indepth response a couple of days ago but will summarize for you. Got to you doctor and DO insist you have a CT urogram - look it up for more info - and then a flexible cystoscopy (camera inserted into bladder - local anaesthic). I've suffered BADLY since January 2014 with recurrent UTI's with blood in urine along with those awful excrutiating burning symptoms , high fever etc we all know only too well. Augmentin is only antibiotic which doesn't upset my body and I'm not resistant to.Shown by having urine cultures. E-coli is what does me in! Nothing to do with food, cleanliness etc.(Consultant told me.see below) Women of a certain age probably have vaginal dryness and need pessaries or Replens. Get that checked out. DO NOT be fobbed off by your GP!!!! I was! I screamed down the phone to him about 15 days ago! I WAS referred! I HAVE seen the Consultant Urologist! I will be having the above investigations. Am on very low dosage of Augmentin for the time being. PLEASE do NOT allow your GP to refuse you these investigations. It's YOUR body sandy67 and you are the ONLY person who can fight for YOUR wellbeing! Everybody insist insist insist. Oh yes my left kidney aches slightly. Drink about 2 litres of water. If you can't drink that much water DO drink at least 1 and half! Good luck!

Good on you. Well done but it's a shame we have to go to such extremes to get an appointment.

Thank you doloroso. I have been really worrying wondering how I could have contracted this - I am very hygienic in the kitchen AND bathroom and have been thinking all kinds of things. My partner upset me saying my ex could have given me an std! The doctor sent me a letter with prescription saying this particular infection is very resistant to both antibiotics taken orally and it is very likely I will need injections so have to do another sample after the pills finish on thursday. I feel dreadful, getting pains in my head, my belly feels off but I cant explain how, just feels ...... Well weird really, like I havent eaten for ages, crampy, I dont know, just weird and I am So SO tired! i can sleep within seconds of lying down which is extremely unusual for me. He did say in the letter if i feel unwell to go back at any time, so I may have to do that sooner rather than later as ther is no sign after 3 days of these, of any improvement at all. The pain at the end of a wee is awful and I feel dirty which is really upsetting me,,especially after what my partner said, he went all quiet on me! This is one more problem on such a long list of health problems, so long in fact my occy health doctor has now recommended dismissal due to ill health which is also worrying me as I have no pension with them, oh dear thats another rant sorry! Thanks again x

Oh dear me you poor thing. Are you in the USA? You mention occy health doctor and not having a pension - am not familiar with "occy"  Occupational? Anyway, you cannot "catch" UTI as you know. In 2010 I was in hospital and nurse told me I had a UTI and I remember making a fool of myself telling her that I'd probably "caught" it from the hospital!smileShe soon put me right! Told me to drink more water and from then on I got it frequently yuk. Do take care.x

I suspect utis can be transferred backwards  & forwards via sex .In men NSU .There is also bacterial vaginitus with trichomonus chlamydia connection that seems to alternate needing metranizadole .Apparently not sexually transmitted .

I had research regarding this finding spina bifida occulta ,neurogenic bladder double ureters.I now don't get the pain but same utis  .Fortunately have kept kidneys clear with Professor monitoring  as was getting very nasty boils. Now bbeen left with GPs who are not specialists allowing hospital admins to block .

Hi, yeah it is occupational health. I know and don't understand wht my partner thought for a minute that I had caught something of my cheating ex! If I had, he would be symptomatic by now anyway - we have been together 18 months. I am in UK. Have you had these injections the doc has said I will need? Is yours e-coli too and how the hell has it happened? Sorry - loads of questions! X

No injections - never ever been mentioned. Yes e coli but as stated in previous posts I insisted on seeing a specialist and will be having those investigations I mentioned so DO insist you want a referral. Good luck x

Hi, just thought I would let you know what has been happening. As I said the doc said if the antibiotics didnt work i would need iV treatment. I put in my sample it came back satisfactory but I remained symptomatic. Aftr a few days i was in a lot of pain so visited te surgery and had to see another gp. I took a sample, she said it was definitely infected and I explained that the other doc said I would need IV as no point in taking more oral antibiotics as they wont work. She poo pood his advice and prescribed some old run of the mill antibiotic which i knew would be useless, and asked me to do anither sample the next morning which would be sent off.  Another 3 days and I was in great pain and rang the surgery and asked if they had results and could I speak to one of the doctors that had actually said more oral, antibiotics would not work (as I had also spoken to another doctor on the phone who agreed with the first one in the meantime). Anyway they were not available so a different doc rang me. She said my sample had again come back with ecoli and I should take the first lot of antibiotics again, as the ones that I were prescribed the second time were no good for this (tell me something I didnt already know!). I explained that I had already tried those antibiotics and the infection came back with a vengeance. She said this time they will work! I was all set to go into hospital last week to have the iv and get shut of this once and for all, before christmas!  but she insisted they will work this time. Well I have just finished them yesterday and I know they have not worked! I am in pain and discomfort again, and I have to put in a sample on Monday. I already know what the results will be and i think they will tell me I have to go into hospital! The results will come back on Wednesday, christmas eve! I am so angry at the lack of communication between my doctors! And now I may end up in hospital over christmas! Why would two established doctors and partners say one thing and then two young women doctors go totally against them and say there is no need for iV at this stage?! I am so tired with it too, house is a mess, I have not even put decs up yet! Oh dear sorry for moaning x

sandy. Firstly you're not moaning and secondly how awful this is for you. Lack of communication is the cause of so many problems in the NHS. Can't you just take yourself off to A&E? At least then you might get treated before Christmas.

Hi matron, yes I have thought about doing this, but I have been advised that once admitted for the IV treatment it willbe for a minimum of five days, thats why I wanted to get it sorted last week. Now I think I will just suffer until after christmas day at least as I dont want ti ruin it for the kids. Its the head sweating I cant stand though also, it is horrible and very embarrassing if I happen to be out and my sleep because of it is very little. I will put up for it as long as I can now, its just a pity they couldnt have sorted this last week, when it was obvious (at least to the first two well established doctors and partners) that further oral antibiotics would be useless. I actually feel worse bow than before when  it all started x

Hi sandy67. May I ask why you have not been referred to a Consultant Urologist yet? I have seen a Specialist Urologist who happens to be my late Dad's urologist. I have had a CT Urogram. Went back for the result in the week and thank G-d my kidneys and bladder are fine. I shall be having a flexible cystoscopy in the New Year. I am now on a low dose of amoxicillin - just 250mgs daily. Due to my age I've been prescribed with vaginal pessaries which do not agree with me so have suspended them (never ever needed any form of HRT and looks like by body is refusing it, so I listen to my body) and continue using Replens. The Specialist Urologist does NOT know why I'm having recurring uti (e-coli)!!!! Once I've had the cystosopy we shall have a better picture. E-coli is a BITCH!! We all know that unfortunately. However I'm going to win this battle. sandy67 YOU MUST BE REFERRED!! Why on earth you HAVE NOT been beats me! Forgive my impertinence! I wish you less pain and discomfort but until YOU insist on being referred, you will NEVER have this horrible condition sorted. Let me know. Excuse my harshness. I wish you well. GET REFERRED!!!   P L E A S E!!!! ARGH!twisted
