Using crutches after THR

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi

I had THR 1 week ago. This was done using a posterior, uncemented approach (with titaniuam shaft/ceramic ball/polyethelene cup)

My Dr has said to use crutches for 4 weeks with only 10kg weight-bearing on that hip. Is that normal? I read on lots of forums and other info that full weight-bearing walking should start as soon as not painful (even for uncemented hips) as the best way to rehab.

Thoughts?

    hi Simone

Does seem strange especially with the weight spec I have had both mine done ;not at the same time; and used BOTH crutches for 3 months I found that I felt safer and although did not take much weight off later it helped to get both legs working together. I would go with what ever you are comfortable with we are all different in our rate and style of recovery.

Please take your time and do what you feel comfortable with if you over do it your body will let you know!! Good luck

with my hip i was on crutches fully for 4wks then off and on using sometime just 1 upto 12 wks depending where walking and terrain walking on. id say you will know yourself when ready to try it alone or with 1 crutch, but never heard about the weight bearing issue?

i do think there is no right or wrong answer here as everyone progresses at different rates. id just go with what feels right and comfier with yourself.

I have had two hip ops and was allowed to have full weight in both cases. In fact the day after my recent hip op I did not have crutches, but sticks, so I had to put full weight on my leg.
