UTI doesn’t seem to be going away

Hi guys, so recently I thought myself to have a UTI as I have a past with them and know what the symptoms are. I gave it 2 days and it got worse, so worse that I had to miss a day from college while my dad took me to ER where they tested my urine and prescribed me the antibiotics nitrofurantoin for 3 days, however on the second day my conditions didn’t not improve and have worsened. Today I went to a doctor in a hospital where I told him everything, he tested my urine there and said I do still have bacteria still there and now has prescribed me another antibiotic called Trimethoprim which I was prescribed last time I had a UTI (however last time I had a UTI this bad all my samples came back negative). I know it’s way too early to say whether things are getting better but I have a bad feeling they won’t, I think this is just my anxiety talking but I hear it could be chronic UTIs or even OAB. I just hope this goes away soon as I have my exams next week
If anyone has had or is in a similar situation could you please let me know, thank you xx

I had a colonoscopy this past January. I came home immediately with symptoms of a UTI. I called the surgeon and he sent me an antibiotic (can't remember what it was). My symptoms did not get any better. Feb 7, 2018 - Dropped urine specimen off at Primary Care Doctor's office. They prescribed Macrobid and sent off for culture. Culture showed no bacteria. Macrobid did very little to relieve symptoms. Feb 18, 2018 – Went to an after hours clinic. Urine test did not show any bacteria. Prescribed Bactrim. Did not do culture as far as I know. Symptoms seemed to be some better for a few weeks, but returned. March 23, 2018 – Went to another walk in clinic after experiencing UTI symptoms and low grade temperature. Culture showed no bacteria but was prescribed 10 days of Keflex. For 3 days, I had fever, really bad abdominal cramps and slept 18 out of 24 hours for three days. It took 5 doses of antibiotics before my pain went away, and another couple of days for symptoms to go away. The last 3 days I was on the Keflex, I felt really good with no symptoms whatsoever. Two days after ending the Keflex, I began to have feelings of my bladder being full when it wasn't. I started drinking eight to ten 8 oz. glasses of water per day and the symptoms got better. I made an appointment with a Urologist. He diagnosed me with an overactive bladder. He said I did not have a UTI. He also said that the colonoscopy had probably triggered the overactive bladder as well as my Diverticulosis. He believes that the episode I had with fever and chills was a flare of the Diverticulosis. He prescribed Myrbetriq. My symptoms are gone. If you keep having problems, you may need to see a urologist.
I am concerned because my urine never shows bacteria, yet I have had 4 supposedly UTI episodes. Although in the past, I have believed I had UTI's and no bacteria showed up. In the past, one round of antibiotics seemed to work.
All of this started with the colonoscopy. Before that, I was fine.

I too have had a past with UTIs and after one dose of antibiotics they went straight away. My last UTI was very bad as I couldn’t stay off the toilet and was in a lot of pain yet my urine showed no bacteria. It is strange for me this time that my urine is showing bacteria yet these antibiotics don’t feel like they are helping me, I have a feeling this is just the beginning of a long journey

I was really concerned, too. I was beginning to think I had a chronic infection, bladder stones or worse. The urologist immediately guessed what the problem was. An over active bladder is easily fixed with a prescription. A nurse practitioner told me some UTI's are very resistant to antibiotics. You may have to try another antibiotic. You really should consider seeing a urologist. They are highly trained in bladder and kidney issues. Even my primary care doctor did not know what was wrong. Better yet, if you can find a urogynocologist, that would be even better. They are certified as both a urologist and gynecologist and treat only women. It is a fairly rare specialty. I live in the US in state of Georgia and there are less than a dozen in whole state. I am fortunate to live within an hour of one. I would not stress too much until you see a specialist.

Thanks for the reply,
Unfortunately my symptoms haven't changed so it looks like I have a very resistant UTI. I am going to ask to go doctors tomorrow as it will be the end of my second dose antibiotics and if I can I will mention being seen by a urologist because I can't take this anymore. It's not helping my anxiety as it's leading me to have panic attacks because the pain is that strong and I'm scared to why it wont go away.

Hi Amber I had a recurrent UTI before Christmas. I took four courses of antibiotics and although my symptoms improved with one kind of antibiotics the symptoms returned as soon as I finished the course and the other antibiotic did nothing for my symptoms.
In the end I got rid of my UTI with D-Mannose. It's a naturally occurring sugar that our bodies can't digest, so it goes straight to the bladder where it sticks to the E-coli stopping it from attaching to the bladder wall. It only works with e-coli infections but 95% of infections are from e-coli apparently. You can also use it preventatively.
Thought I'd share as it was a lifesaver for me.

Update on my situation if it’s a help to anyone.
Since my last post I have been in out of the doctors on many different antibiotics - the only time I began to see improvement was when I finished my course of Cefalexin/Cephalexin yet after a few days of finishing them all the symptoms came back and that’s when I begged my doctor to refer me to a urologist - I have been for ultrasound scans on my bladder and kidneys and blood tests - this was a long process and in the meantime I took the advice on this page and began to take D.Mannose on the daily which wiped out my symptoms and I felt normal again! After a few days of feeling normal I stopped taking the D.Mannose and I was perfect for weeks, yet now all of the symptoms have returned and I believe it may be due to me shaving my intimate area with shaving cream and maybe not cleaned it thourough enough or maybe because I have hay fever and have been blowing my nose a lot therefore there is a lot of bacteria on my hands. I am now back on taking the d.mannose again but I am scared this will never go away.
Hope this has helped someone!

I'm so glad the D-Mannose has helped you Amber. Some people are prone to UTIs for various reasons and it is something they deal with on a regular basis. I would suggest taking a small amount of d-mannose as a preventive measure after you shave and after intercourse if you are sexually active. Good luck and I hope it continues to work for you. J x

It’s been a life saver for me but now I’m facing all my old symptoms again and still no improvement after taking them for a few days - I believe I may have an overactive bladder as severe utis can trigger this so I hope the specialist I am going to see will help me xx
