UTI to Septic Shock & Unconsciousness!

Okay, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.

I am 67 year old male and for many years I suffered with UTIs! Eventually my doctor referred me to the Urology Department at my local hospital. Following intensive investigations the consultant informed me the reason I was getting UTIs was that I was retaining urine in my bladder and this was becoming infected. I was instructed in the use of the 'Pocket Catheter'. I've now been using the catheter approx 3 times each day for a few years. My situation now is that I can't pass urine naturally and have to rely on the catheter.

So, I still experience the occasional UTI usually treated with antibiotics. However, my situation has been getting worse. In short, last weekend I was feeling a little shivery, had mild symptoms of UTI and went for a bath to relieve the shivers. Apparently I went into septic shock, my blood pressure dropped and I lost consciousness. I ended up in A&E having very little recollection of what happened. I was put on a drip of antibiotics, remained in hospital for 3 days during which time I had a general anaesthetic to remove an infected cyst from my back. I've now finished the course of antibiotics in tablet form.

I'm now feeling a lot better and resting up before returning to my day job in two weeks time.

I haven't received any instructions on how I should manage my condition in the future. As I can't urinate naturally drinking lots of water seems to be counter productive as I'll need to use my catheters more often and I believe the use of the catheter can introduce bacteria.

Can anyone give me advice on how I should manage my situation?
