UTIs but tests negative.

hi. i wonder if anyone can explain this for me. i suffer from UTIs but i don't have symptoms like burning or stinging. I feel sick, clammy, lower back ache and so tired. when i go to the walking centre, the nurse dips my urine which is not smelly and says i have an infection. every time it is sent to the lab, it comes back negative with leucocytes . My gp doesnt believe i have an infection. But i respond to the antibiotics. I don't understand it.

Are you female? I had the exact same issue for over a year all the symptoms of a UTI but the culture was negative and scan came back normal. I lived with the symptoms for a year until two days ago I went back to the doctor who performed a pelvic exam and i was found to have a bladder prolapse which is what has been causing my bladder issues pelvic and back pain. Hope this helps.

      Hi Jacqueline,

Yes, i am female and 64 years old. Could that be it? I know i have a slight prolapse. A consultant told me a couple of years ago and i have been doing pelvic floor exercise with a Kegel 8. What were you advised to do to help please?

I was advised to do pelvic floor exercises, the alternative is a pessery or surgery which are both quite unpleasant apparently! I am planning on getting a Kegel8 too as I'm 34 and ive been told it will get worse as I age which is a bit depressing. I've got my fingers crossed that the Kegel8 helps me.

My symptoms are frequent urination but not much comes out, pelvic, back and hip pain.

I have been doing the pelvic floor exercises with the Kegel 8 for about a year. I saw a physio who told me how to use it. She set it on program 6 (50/300) and said all the other programs were just useless. And you could find other devices much cheaper. i think I'll go and see her again. I struggle to pass water too and had a urethra stretched a few years back. That helped but didn't last. I do get backache and tender tummy but i am nauseous and so tired when i have one. oh well, the joys of being a woman. Let me know how you get on.

It is infinitely better to put everything in writing regarding your problems and address that to your health provider. There are bacteria that may not be isolated by the tests your lab has carried out. There are more complex scientific tests that may be needed that will detect what your infection is if you have one.

Some infections are more difficult to detect than others. Some bacteria require the more up to date test which is the PCR test which even that I see may not be infalable but it does sometimes detect infections that other test do not detect.

It is incredible that certain bacterias can live within a human or an animal that is encapsulated or is made quiescent. Certain bacteria that has been quiescent can however become active if the conditions allow it to become active. This is of course complex but if you feel you are being harmed by an infection then say so. In writing of course because that is a necessity.
