Vaginal Atrophy. When will it go away

Posted , 20 users are following.

Started out as burning then went to feeling like I was sitting on sandpaper now it is just miserable discomfort.  Occasionally lightens up but never goes away.  Been using Premarin cream  for a few months.  Feeling very discouraged.  Can not live like this forever.  Anyone have any thoughts?

It's awful isn't it I started on estriol cream and it does help but not right so I bought a moisturiser called YES VM  have ordered another pack and won't be using it. It's safe to use with estriol cream but don't care how safe it's no use to me.  It felt like I had a UTI  I was up to bathroom five times and the tingling was back and I was disgusted. I felt like sitting on the closiematt toilet to wash it out.  I will stick to the estriol and my doctor says it is a very low oestrogen cream and he would struggle to find any sbsorbed into the bloodstream.  Is the cream you are on an oestrogen cream. I would try anything

    hope you find something suitable

I was going to order Yes and was told it's not available in the US anymore. I don't know whether or not this is true, but I will be sure not to get it after reading your post.    I had the same problem over the weekend with having to constantly urinate and bladder pressure after using estrace and coconut oil.  I was in misery and had to call the doctor.  I wondered if it was urethritis because it did not feel like a UTI.  I stopped using everything I had been using began using hydrocortisone 1% ointment and I felt like a new woman tonight.  I was using this to begin with (suggested by my dermatologist) and it was helping only to go to the pelvic pain doctor and he prescribed estrace.  I went downhill from there.  He ordered a compounded estrogen and I hope it helps the va, athough I can't pick it up until I return. He did order hydrocortisone/lidocaine which I went to pick up but the pharmacy had to order it and I will receive it tomorrow.

      Hi Sheila

your GYN is right!  Mine started me out with 2 weeks of Estrace cream to begin with then stopped that and on the 15th night had me start with Vagifem 2x weekly.  Yes, it does take several weeks but that's because it takes time to heal your vagina with adding low dose estrogen locally.  Before starting this I felt like I had UTI all the time and felt miserable.  This has been a blessing for me and I am able to feel normal again.  Some ladies stop the Vagifem too soon.  Also once you start the healing you do not want to stop the Vagifem..this is a lifelong medication.....if you stop all the discomfort will come back......believe me I know!

if some of you cannot get coverage with insurance have your doctor fight for you also there is generic called YUVAFEM if that helps.

im sorry if I am repeating myself again ladies.  I also think once you heal the vaginal walls.....the outside will heal as well.

so glad we have each other!

      have a good day.........also Lorrie...Have a great trip!!

      Hi, Wendy,

My dr. has finally ordered a compounded cream for me.  I see that a lot of women start out using estrace daily and then two or three times weeky.  My dr. prescribed it for me to take daily. Isn't this too much?  I wonder if that is why I was having such a bad reaction.  I am not using it at all and waiting until after I return to pick up the compound.  I did just pick up lidocaine 3%/hycrocortisone 0.5% cream and I will use it tonight if I have any burning.  The retail cost was 56.00 and some change and I picked it up with a good rx coupon for 19.44!  My insurance did not cover it.

      Hi Lorrie

I am so sorry that your insurance company is not covering some of these medications that you need.  If women have been diagnosed with Atrophic Vaginitis and have discomfort..... the vaginal walls are lacking estrogen and to get healthy we need either the Estrace cream or similar or Vagifem or Yuvafem or if some can afford Mona Lisa Treatments ( but don't know long term effects ) it helps some women and others still need the Vagifem with the treatments.  Lorrie, if you have been diagnosed with AV it is important to use the cream...use it everyday as your doctor recommends he must think you need to......after several weeks if you are doing well ask him if you can use the cream a little less.....either 4 days or 3 days a week ...he will advise you......but remember you cannot stop the cream as if you do the discomfort will come back.  I hope your doctor will be able to contact your insurance company and try and get Vagifem or Yuvafem approved.  It's a tablet that is inserted.

Not sure when your road trip is......I hope you will be great and will have a wonderful time!!  Get yourself healed inside so you will get healed outside!   Best,

      Wendy

Have you thought about the Mona Lisa touch? Your vaginal atrophy will disappear and you will be a different woman. I'm 71 and intercourse used to be painful but not now. It's FDA approved and has been for years. It should be covered by insurance but it is not right now. I'm sure it will be. When I looked in my area the prices were anywhere from $1000-2400 for three treatments. I went with the $1000 at a local gynecologist/obstetrician and it's wonderful. Look into it.

      Hi Arlene

do you need to use Vagifem or any creams with doing the Mona Lisa treatments?  I saw that some women in addition to the treatments added them.

      thank you

I have only one thought.  Tell our gynecologists to stick a hot poker up their vaginas and they will know what we are experiencing!  Sorry . . .
