vaginal dryness

I am 60 years old and have the most awful vaginal dryness its totally killing my sex life with my amazing husband of 40 years.  If we manage to have sex using 100 lubricants i bleed and i am sore for days its so depressing.  I have tried all sorts of natural products including the yes products which are a good lubricant but does not actually help the problem.  Finally  in desperation i visited my Gp who gave me Ovestin 1mg cream but now after reading all the information on the package leaflet i am terrified of using it.  Please could anyone reassure me if they have used this in the past, or are in fact still using it.

Hi Jackie.   I am 76 years old and most of this year I’ve suffered from vaginal atrophy and it was ruining my life.  I couldn’t even sit down or walk without agony and used Ovestin and all the other creams and pessaries but I was allergic to them all.  In desperation I asked my doctor to let me try an HRT patch which he did.  It’s called Evorel Conti and I’ve been on it for 6 weeks now and I’m so much better. I can sit down for as long as I like now and no burning pain when I urinate or at all.  I’ve done away with the ice packs and pain killers.   There is a very small risk of breast cancer because of my age but I believe in quality of life not quantity, after all I’ll be 80 in 4 years.  It’s not for everyone but to me it’s working like magic.  By the way I don’t have a partner, just as well as I wouldn’t have let anyone near that part of me!

Hope you find relief soon.  Marion.

Yes, everything shrank a bit with me. Looked less plump. Plumpness returned with ovestin.

Hi arlee.  I don’t actually have osteoporosis but I would have thought being on an HRT patch would help it.  By the way 3 months on and it’s still working on the atrophy.  So I’ll stay on it for ever if I can.

I am using ovestin and I get on fine with it. Vagifem made me swell up so much I couldn't even get a finger in, let alone my hubbies penis! Most products either sting me or made me swell up so I didn't have great expectations for ovestin and I was very apprehensive about using it, but I am sooooooo pleased I did. My vagina has been retuned to a much younger version of itself, nice and moist, robust elasticy tissues. It even looks younger! And, most importantly, sex is wonderful again!

Ovestin is a local oestrogen so very very little gets into your general system. The drugs companies have to put all those warning which apply to all HRT just to cover themselves, just in case. It also conatains Estriol which is a bioidentical oestrogen, not synthetic like estradiol and estrone found in other HRTs and which have all the horrible risks. Estriol is particularly good of genitounriany problems. Estriol is considered the weak oestrogen and has a protective function - it actually protects against cancer, stroke and bloodclots (studies conducted in Japan have shown this).

I would seriously recommend trying the ovestin before anything else. See how you get in with it. If ovestin hadn't worked for me I was going to try HRT patches next. I recommend trying the ovestin when you are not sore and just trying a bit on the outer skin first to see if your skin is fine with it. I did that and after just one use I saw that the skin there was slightly plumped up and had a less wrinkled appearance. I used it every day for 2 weeks then gradually reduced it to twice a week. I think my hubby and I started have sex after the two weeks of use.

Honestly I was quite surprise by the effect it had. I mean I expected it to get more robust and elastic and moist but not nice and plump and young again. My hubby likes it too wink

I thought, if it can do this for my vagina, what can it do for my face?!?!?! But i researched it on the internet and apparently it only has that effect on mucus membrane type skin (boooo!)

    Hi Jackie

I too suffered after my hysterectomy and due to family history couldnt have hrt.

I've been using a vaginal moisturiser but also omega 7 capsules. They did help but in the end after lots research I went to gp and asked for the lowest dose oestregen cream. It puts my risk of breast cancer much higher but i couldn't function properly so had to and am glad to say it's worked. I'm using estradiol 0.05mg.

I too take omega 7 capsules. Omega 7 is in sea buckthorn oil which has been shown in a good scientific study to restore the condition of the vaginal wall cells comparable to oestrogen in vaginal atrophy and is recommended as a viable alternative for women who cannot use oestrogen. It cannot restore moisure levels or elasticity, just the thickness of the vaginal wall. In the end I had to use oestrogen cream. But the effect is local and very little gets into the general system.

Hi I have been using Ovestin for at least 2 years with good results with no irritation. It has restored the inner lip firmness and made the skin more elastic. My skin was very fragile down there and would tear easily plus my lips were shrinking back rapidly and this has halted, it is in much better condition now. It was given to me by a specialist when my Dr had tried large doses of Vagifem without success , I hope this helps.
