Val, I've had LS for forty years and psoriasis longer. When my psoriasis was bad on my fingers, my nails would become ridged.

I went to 'cosmetology' school in 1974 (hairdressing). We were cautioned against false nails where the nails have to be sanded down and the manicurist actually disturbs the nail bed. (If it hurts, this is what's happening).

You couldn't pay me to have false nails – I work with my hands and keep mine trimmed very close.

I don't know whether stopping the nails from breathing could be an issue. It's all part of our skin and we have to watch for the Koebner effect – any trauma to the skin can trigger flare-ups of LS (and psoriasis). For example when I go to the dentist, the prolonged pressure on my lower lip and chin triggers a psoriasis patch that lasts weeks.

So, we always weigh our priorities. There are dietary things I haven't addressed because I refuse to make any more sacrifices. Not doing my nails is no sacrifice for me.

I have to say that with all the health problems I am dealing with, false nails arent something I am remotely interested in.

I think  you could cause more problems long term by having this done just for the sake of your nails looking nice...my post regarding nails was purely out of interest..I simply wondered how common it was.

    Best to you.

I started having my nails done in February , the false bit is the tip that they glue to edge of my own nail then I have a gel mixture painted over the top of my nail to blend it all together and they look lovely when finished and have the infils done every 3 weeks. First time cost me £25 then infils cost £18 . I have my toenails trimmed and painted every 6 weeks at a cost of £8 which I think is reasonable as cannot bend my foot now to do my own and wouldn't dream of asking my partner to do it. I don't smoke only drink occasionally indoors don't drive so think I deserve to spoil myself having my nails done it's such a moral booster. I can garden with no problem and household chores as well. Give it a try will make you feel good.

You're probably better off with that non-invasive nail job than I am with my 10 oz. of red wine. As I say, it's about priorities.

Having just read a 2012 review of all LS studies I'm not feeling like I can have any more control over oit that I have now.
