Hi all I have been diagnozed with hiatus hernia and take omeprozol 20mg twice daily, plus domperidone 10mg 3 times daily, plus gaviscone advance 3 times a day. it seems to be helping at the moment, but what I would like to know, is can a hiatus hernia affect your bowel performance?  I sometimes find that I have to push quite hard, and this affects my hernia, and then I get pain. someone suggested I take prune juice in the morning, but i'm frightened of the acid reflux it might give me as i'm frightened of being sick. sorry to be so personal, but can anyone help?

    Hi Valerie

I also have a HH and take 40mg topzole per day for 11 mopnths now. I also make use of gaviscone advance and this does make for constipation so I use 5 ml of "Siberian Pine Nut Oil" per day to keep the digestive tract in working. You can google the make of oil and read up about it. You normally find it at health shops, hope it helps.

Hi Dave and John! Thanks so much for replying. Now i'd like to ask some soup will this be ok for me?thing else. My friend has given me some cans of potato and leak soup

As long as the soup is not too creamy but it depends on the person. For example if I eat bread then I get pain at the sturnum area. Soup is also easly digested which makes it useful.

Hi Dave!  Thanks so much for that, i'll give it a go. I also love plain digestives, but again, don't know if they're good for a hh? maybe you can reply and let me know what you think.

Hi Val, you mentioned you take 20 mg of omeprozol twice daily which is a Porton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) which blocks acid production in the stomach.

Without much acid in your stomach food takes longer to digest thats why it is important to really chew your food finely with a HH. How informed are you on taking PPI's?

Hi. Most posts on these subjects are quite detailed and personal, so don't worry. Ask whatever you like. That's what it's for. (But I can't help you with your question.) cry

Hi Valerie, i've had constant pain with my HH, i can't have any diary, bread, fatty foods or salad!. I am the opposite and always have diahorra, a maassive bloated stomach which is embarrasing. If i wear a bra then the pain doubles so i struggle on a daily basis. Any food that is hard to chew, red meat esp then they say avoid!. Since cutting all this out the heartburn has been so much better, but the pain never goes away, been to hospital so many times but they won't do anything to help me :-(

Don't no hardly anything, only that they're supposed to help with the acid reflux which comes with hh

Your 3 levels of medication for acid reflux is PPIs, H2 blockers then your gaviscone/rennies etc. H2 blockers is just a step down from PPIs. I was told to take the PPI at the same time each day, eg. 08h00 in morning before I eat or drink anything then wait for at least 1 hour before you eat anything. PPIs normally activate/block your acid production for about 24 hours give or take. When on PPIs a person should take a good multi-vitamen as not all the minrals & vit are absorbed by your body from the food you eat. I was told not to take any other tables at the same time as the PPI but can be taken later on in the day. Hope it helps.

Hi Dave!  The doc put me on to the domperidone and the gaviscone as well as being put on the omeprazole.  as the omeprezole alone wasn't working.  she told me to take the omepreprozol with the domperidone first thing, then wait for half an hour before eating then to take the gaviscone about 2 hours after.  i then take the domperidone about 11 am just before lunch. then again at 4pm.  i then take my second gaviscone about 6p.m and the omeprozol at 7 which would be 12 hours after taking it in the morning. i then take my final gaviscone at about 10pm.  this is what i was instructed to do. sorry for going on so long, but i thought i'd let you know. I wasn't advised to take any multi vitimins.  thanks you've been so helpful.
