Varicose vein removal NHS

Hi all, haveing read various posts re this subject I thought I would share my thoughts. Contraray to one post I read, the NHS will (under certain curcumstances?) still fund the removal of Varicose veins. I had my op at an NHS treatment centre. This is a privately run centre where the NHS pay them per operation. Very nice pleace, clean well run, great staff etc etc (Emersons Green, Bristol). My op was yesterday, left leg reomoval of veins rather than laser of foam injection etc. and so far so good. I am taking Paracetamol (as prescribed) and Ibuprofen (not prescibed but suggested by the nurse during recovery at the hospital). No pain at all so far, but I understand this could very well get worse over the next few days. So will post more over the coming days...

Day 2 post op. I have read that the pain is due to start today and increase to day 8 post op. However I am still feeling no pain... Could this be down to the consultant anesthetist recommending a "block" which she said she would administer by injection after I was under the general. This she told me would require an ultrasound to find the right spot (nerve?) a little above the knee and should last, according to the text books, between 4 and 12 hours but her experience tended to indicate 24 to 48 hours. Well it's now over 48 hours and my leg still feels fine! Doubtless time will tell, but long may it continue!!

Hi I had laser ablation of upper part of great saphenous vein and removal of the lower part. This was done five days ago. I have a bit of discomfort and am looking forward to removing the very tight bandaging and only wearing the compression stocking. I just had a peek at my heel and ankle and there is a huge patch of bright red capillary veins. I had some before the op but now have far more. Did you get this? If so has it begun to disappear now? I ask because I have an inflamed achilles bursa on that heel and it feels very sore now and I am wondering if there is increased pressure from capillary blood trying to find a new vein to drain into. I would value more info on your recovery. There doesn't seem to be much I can find on the web. Thanks

Hi, not sure I am going to be able to help greatly. Like you I had some red capillary veins around the ankle area pre op. These did not get worse post op and indeed are now slightly better than before the op. Again like you, I found the tight bandage somewhat uncomfortable and felt much better once I was using the compression stockings instead. I found walking tended to increase the discomfort but persevered as I had read longer term this would help with recovery. This did indeed seem to be the case and I walked for around 20 mins each day. Sorry to be of limited help!
