varicose vein surgery

Well i'd finally had enough of my big unsightly varicose veins and decided that enough was enough, at 37 i thought i should get them done while i was young enough to still wear fashionable clothes! The 10mths to a year i spent waiting for the op, worrying about the procedure/being put to sleep/pain after was 100 times worse than having the thing done! In fact i was quite looking forward to having the other leg done as well. THe bit that did test me was the sticky restricting bandage, and the supporting stockings after that you have to wear for what seems like weeks. If like i did, you are strawling the sites to find out about this op, my advice is to go for it. It really isnt that bad.

Hi!! I am glad to hear your surgery went well. Well I have had these ugly veins since I was in my teens. I was told to remove them last year but I was scared. Then I found out I have a blood clot in the vein, and you know that means it can travel to your lungs! So on January 17/08. I went to see my Vascular Surgeon. He scheduled Vein Surgery on Feb 26/08. A month away! I am so scared to be put to sleep. I was put to sleep for my Gallbladder Surgery and I was ok. But this is a blood vessel you know! He said I can have the spinal injection, my mother said it hurts so much but the pain subsides afterwards. I am not sure what to do. I might as well go to sleep! So any input would be great to hear from you! I am only 25! So yeah!

Hi - I had both legs done 16 years ago in between having babies, and have never had any trouble. I was in hosp overnight, can't remember any bad pain, just that it was the hottest summer ever and I had hip to toe bandages on for about 3 weeks! The most painful part was the cuts in my groin (in the thigh crease part), but it was a bit of a shock when the district nurse came to take the stitches out - that DID hurt, and my legs were multicoloured bruises, very pretty! I would say I was about 4 weeks recovering, because you are told to walk every day almost immediately after the op, at first it is uncomfortable.

I'd say go for it, my legs have been fine, the scars are only just visible, although when I get a tan you can see them more, but they still look better than big bulgy veins.

    Good luck :D

Thank God I got some good feedback!! I am going through with the surgery. And surgery now you don't get the big cut at your leg, you get a small groin one, and 4 small incisions and the back of my left thigh. So it's done lapropscopically like my gallbladder those scars can't even see that much they are 4 tiny ones on my tummy as well! I will keep you updated on my surgery, thanks again for the reply!!

Great to see a post that gives varicose vein surgery/ procedures the thumbs up! I have just had micro frequency ablation/ stripping and injectables. After a 90 min op with general anaesthetic I walked out of the hospital and within 24 hrs wasn't even taking painkillers. Bruising is minimal. I worried about the whole thing for months. More posts like these will reassure people to go for it and please do! Looking forward to next summer already when I can wear clothes that are above the ankle -line!!
