Venesection

Hi all

It was really worth me going yesterday to extract my pint of blood???

Level didn't drop by anything, it maybe because I missed 3 weeks.

As they had changed me to fortnightly v/sections and that was the first

Appointment, if it doesn't move down after my next one I will ask to go

Back to weekly, even if it only drops by 10 at least it coming down.

Cheers philx

Sounds like you are loading almost as fast as you are venesecting.  Have you got something else going on, inflammation, malignancy, fatty liver, etc?  If you have something like this going on, your dr needs to address that issue too, and not just think venesections will solve the proglem.

A standard 500ml venesection removes 0.25 grams of iron from the body, that is the equivalent of iron in a 50mm nail.  It takes 4 vx to remove 1 gram of excess iron (4 nails).  A person with moderate iron overload may have between 4 and 10 grams of excess iron, which will take between 16 and 40 vx to reduce to normal levels.  Severe iron overload may be up to 40 grams of excess iron which will require up to 160 venesections to reduce to normal levels.

If you are having frequent vx, extra B12 and folate, either in your diet or through supplements, may be helpful.  (And guess where vit B12 naturally occurs - red meat!!)

      Hi Sheryl

All my blood tests are showing no organ damage, I could well have

      An underlying infection,

That said it's only this venesection that didn't drop at all???

Previous 6 dropped my levels from 1130 to level 661,

As I said in previous posting my hemoglobin is a bit irratic ranging

From highest 162 to lowest 120 this is being monitored???

It could also be the fact I had a 3 week break between v/sections

I have emailed the hemotologist nurse to recheck the results,

But be assured if my levels fail to drop after next venesection I will

Be asking to see the consultant hemotologist to run more tests

To find out why it's stopped dropping???

      Cheers Phil x

Phil, by any chance, do you take milk thistle in any form.  A while back I came across a case study wherein a woman was found to not get much reduction from her vx.  The hemotologists told her to stop taking milk thistle which she refused to do, still had problems, and she finally complied, and then her vx started reducing her ferritin iron.

I have written of this before, so forgive me if I am repeating myself.
