Vertical stripes on toenails

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi

I am posting for the first time and am hoping someone can help as am really worried. Every single toe on both feet have dark vertical stripes on them, purply/blue in colour. I googled and read all about subungual melanoma (skin cancer) that manifests in this way.

I went to the doctor and he said it is a fungal infection and that subungual melanoma looks different. But am worried he is wrong. I can't find any information on blue/purple stripey fungal infections on the internet. Could he be wrong? Could it be skin cancer under my toenails?

xx

hello, I think that you would be better to make sure you see a skin specialist asap. I went to a GP for 2 years with constant nail bed infections, I also have hasimotos disease, I have black/dark purple edges on my nails, yellow tinge to them, thickening, slow growing. after 1 year I have a crackling cough with it.. now I have finally been diagnosed with "Yellow Nail Syndrome" its an autoimmune disease as is the hasimotos.. apparently the lymph glands don't work very well with this either so swelling is also involved. my feet are swollen end of the day. just mentioning this to help if you may have any of these symptoms.

good luck with finding out what is wrong. all the best.

Yes, I agree with Lois, definitely see a specialist immediately as the symptoms you describe could be a sign of an underlying condition.

Hey buddy... Don't worry, it is definitely not melanoma! I've had a precancerous one before and it seems I'm getting another one... But anyways... With sbungual melanoma, they offen appear in ONE of the nails, and 75% of the cases are on the thumbs or great toenails. In your case you have tripes on every single toe so you're fine. This looks like the first time you're facing something that could be cancer, I totally understand how you feel. I've had a lymphoma scare just about 3 months ago and it is perfectly normal to be worrying about these stuff, and the worries tend to fade away with time. I hope your doctors already assured you by some kind of tests that you're fine, and hope this feeling goes away soon enough!
