Vertigo Brought On By Different Triggers

I've had vertigo issues since I was 20 where I somehow got BPPV on a plane trip to another state. I did the Epley maneuvers for that but the vertigo kept coming back. Doctors couldn't say why and I basically had to put up with the vertigo every time I got a bad case of it, including an ever-present sensation of not having an equilibrium that worked 100%.

Lately, things have changed where the Epley no longer works and the BPPV doesn't seem to be present anymore...but the vertigo remains.

Vertigo is now triggered by certain things like alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and carbs. Getting angry also seems to trigger the symptoms.

Other than tinnitus which I've also had for over 20 years, I haven't experienced other symptoms. Doctor suggested Meniere’s and possibly a lupus-type disease of my inner ear...but he doesn't know for sure.

Does anybody else have these symptoms?

Sorry I have a question..I’m just curious about how you got bppv on a plane. How did the crystals get dislodged while flying on a plane? Were you properly diagnosed?

I think it was the pressure in-flight. I felt a build up along the way and then hours after I got off, I started feeling the vertigo.

Weeks later I was diagnosed by a doctor who did the Epley which produced Nystagmus during the maneuver. She thought there might be some other kind of dizziness issue going on in addition to that but didn't know what it was exactly.

Have you stopped flying on planes since then? Or have you figured out a way to still go on planes and not have any vertigo afterwards?

I’m too nervous and scared to go on planes now after reading about inner ear problems occurring while flying.

But since I still don’t know what caused my vertigo in December 2016 and in February 2017(doctors misdiagnosed me and never helped me with my problems), I’m being very cautious and I won’t be doing anything that might cause vertigo. Like I’ve declined vacation trips in 2018 because I’m too scared that I might get vertigo on the plane.

    Hi Salinger,

I am 25 and have had vertigo on and off for the past 2 years and i know mine is heavily stress related but lately it has been so bad and I ended up going to a practitioner at a place called the Headache clinic and also an osteopath and they both reckon it is the tension in my neck and an over sensitized brain stem. I have only been to both of them a few days ago and it seem to have helped a bit as they manipulated my neck a bit but my neck is so stiff one of them said If they threw a brick at it it would bounce right back and the way they explained everything and how all the tension in my neck is causing my vertigo makes sense. And My ENT said it was crystals and I had to get use to the feeling and I thought to myself no way am i going to live like this the rest of my life. And I always knew myself, my gut feeling, it had to do with my neck cos it was always clicking even doing minor things like walking.

Will let you know how my progress goes. Still early days for me.

HI Anika,  you mentioned that your ENT said it was crystals causing your vertigo problems, but do you think you were misdiagnosed by him now since you think it is your neck causing the problems?

I have not been to an ENT but my neck has Been stiff and stressed since last year from my job. I’ve tried to give my neck some relief by not doing jobs that caused strain on my neck at work.

      Hey,

It could be possible I had loose crystals in my ears at one point but it can’t have been the only thing because the osteopath explained to me just how bad my neck was and how it strains on the muscles around the ears and all too. It has mainly to do with the sensitized brain stem though. If you have a stiff neck I would go to an osteopath if I were you and tell them everything that has been going on.

      All the best.

I have been dealing with vertigo for ten weeks.  I have  tried everything from PT, patches, different exercises and chiropractor. Still battling it.  I'm going to try acupuncture next week.  When you said it was your neck I'm thinking that maybe me as well.  What is your doctor doing for your neck?

      Hi Jody,

I am not seeing a doctor as such but a practitioner trained in the field of dealing with the head and neck and vertebrae and all that. I have only been once and I am going back again tomorrow to see what else happens but that said I will need to see them once a week for 6-8 weeks. I know somebody who was waaaay worse than me and was home for 4 months and she was the one who recommended I go to these people because she got better from them. Over here where I live they are called the Headache clinic.

Do you by any chance get any funny sensations in the back of your head like more towards your neck? And did the chiro say anything in particular about your neck or your posture?
