Vertigo, dizziness, is it all in your head? No!

ive read a lot of the vertigo forums.  I've suffered from vertigo for 7 years..And it really upset's me when people say it all in your head" go and see a psychiatrist". There are so many different  types of vertigo and causes of dizziness.. the problem is nearly all types for vertigo will cause some type of depression, anxiety or panic attack.. my neurologist assures me it's a side effect and not a cause!  And that's the other problem it takes sooo long to see doctor's, neurologist, hearing specialist and physio.. it's taken me 3 months to get some answer's.. I thought I was going crazy! I finally was diagnosed withPPPD.. it's a type of vertigo! I have read that PPPD effect 's 10 to 20 percent of the world population! That's a lot of people feeing like their going crazy like me!😂It's a visual vertigo, so my condition gets worse with sensory stimulation. Eg patterned carpets, bright light's, loud noises, even someone moving in front of me! As you can imagine working was almost out of the question.. but I'm learning to deal with it. It's been hard! I now put a bright pink hat on at work when I'm bad. Not only does it block the bright lights out, it makes for interesting conversation with customer , when people ask why I'm wearing it.. you would not believe just how many people suffer with vertigo..some times I even go and lie down for 5 minutes. I'm lucky to have such an amazing work place! I hope this helps and I'm here if anyone need a chat... I know how hard it can be..

I love your positivity! This condition can be so isolating and debilitating so it’s nice to see someone making the best of it.

    I wish you luck!

    Hi Kelly

As the previous poster says - what a lovely positive attitude you have.  I seemed to have been left with off-balance-type problems since I had an attack of BPPV just over three years ago.  some days it goes completely and I feel wonderful and then for some reason it creeps its way back again.  This has caused me awful anxiety as I feel I don't want to go in shops or meet my friends for coffee in case I feel 'off'.  How do you manage in these sorts of situations - do you take any meds or alternative stuff to help you?  I don't take any prescribed meds but am always looking for something alternative that may help.  I take ginger capsules which I think help a bit but never completely gets rid of it.  i wonder too if i kind of bring it on myself as I get anxious worrying about it and am I training the brain to expect to feel this way.  A kind of merry go round.  Does any of this resonate with you?

Hi Barnie, thanks so much for your reply... no I haven't had any medication, I did try stemetil for about a week, but actually thought it was making me worse. I'm like you I don't like having medication for anything, not even a head ache... I have heard that ginger is supposed to be good for vertigo, but I haven't tried them. I can't stand ginger🤢Haha ...I have no idea how I do it.. don't get me wrong I've definitely had some low days, this last bout of vertigo has almost killed me.. I'm in my 3rd month now of this round of vertigo. And of those 12 weeks I think there has only been 2 days of no vertigo! I do have a great support team around me.. my friends all know I have vertigo, if I'm going out I get someone else to drive, just in case! And I always have a back up plan! But I do have two kids that drive and a partner, which I've called on them a few times..the best thing that happen to me was, I was out with a few friends one day , and we where going to have drinks. We had been at a club for about 20 min and I was hit with vertigo, I think I had a panic attack at the same time. Some how I stumbled into the bathrooms, and sat on the floor hyperventilating, then vomited everywhere, as a staff member walked in, she said are you ok! I said sorry I have vertigo.. she said don't worry I get it to! And walked out! I just sat there thinking what the hell just happened.. but it was at that point that I realised, I should just talk to everyone and anyone who would listen about vertigo! Most people understand! So now I tell people if I'm going out somewhere new.. I have vertigo!!!😂  I still get anxiety,  I think it comes hand in hand with vertigo! Some times I've sat at places saying deep breath, deep breath to my self and then I laugh at myself! People must think my nuts!! I've had people ask if I'm okay, i tell them I have vertigo.. and they tell me everyone they know with vertigo! And it calms me down! It's my life!

I forgot to add, I did try acupuncture! I don't know how, but it helped a lot!  You need to find someone who works with vertigo! But I have been told it does work with everyone!

    Hi Kelly

Have private messaged you - acupuncture sounds interesting - I have never tried that.

What treatments are there for this condition?

Well that's the million dollar question! It's like all the other types of vertigo.. it's all trial and error.. there's medication called ssri's I haven't tried it and it wasn't perscribed to me and then there's (VBRT) vestibular/ balance rehabilitation therapy.. I'm trying that now.. but it's not a quick fix!
