Vertigo or Menieres

I've had Vertigo on and off for about 5 hrs. The attacks are getting worse. I've just returned from Tenerife where I blacked out in the bathroom due to dizziness then developed Vertigo 2 days later. I take Betahistine and have tried Cinarrizine too. Last night I had an aching pain behind my right ear on the mastoid bone. It's always my right ear that is affected when I have attacks. I do the Epley manoeuvres but it's not shifting it this time. I lost my hearing in my right ear last year and had to have it syringed but hardly any wax came out. I can hear now. I also have tinnitus in both ears that comes and goes. I would like to know if it is Vertigo or Menieres. I've had this episode for over a week now and still turn upside down if I turn my head to the right. This is the second time I have blacked out, the last time a couple of years ago after being on a ferry. Flying has never affected me before.

Likely both. My menieres is what causes my vertigo. However, it seems to be triggered by stress. Try to understand what triggers it and then see if you can address that. For me, I've increased mindfulness activities including meditation, breathing, exercise, and diet. Good luck

I am having similar issues right now.  I finished 4 weeks of iv Antibiotics and the 2 nd day of being off I developed severe vertigo that has not let up.  It’s worse in the morning.  The pain behind your ear maybe a sign of mastoiditis.  Which can be caused from a ear infection.  If that pain continues I’d see your ENT or PCP to check your ears.  Mastoiditis is very common with ear infections.

I also have a hole in my eardrum and waiting to see my new neurotologist.   I  take Valium when I get these severe attacks and promethazine at night so I can wake up nausea free.   I have tried all the maneuvers but none of them have worked for me.  This disease is awful and does not give you the quality of life we deserve.  Some days are definitely better than others.  But I’m blessed with a supportive family.  I wish you good luck and hope you find relief soon.

Hi Moira. What dosage of betahistine are you on?  My neurotologist increased mine from 8mg x 3 per day to 24 x 3 and since then I have no symptoms. Life has been completely normal for months.  I try to remain stress free and exercise regularly. Salt is a serious trigger and I don’t add it to anything. Perhaps you are due a review with your ent doctor to adjust your medication. Constant vertigo and vomiting is hideous. Best of luck.

Hi Christine, I don't have a ENT doctor. I have never been referred to the hospital. I have read about salt too, I only added it to potatoes and never put it on meals but will be aware of it. Betahistine I take 2 x8mg 3 X day. I tried Cinarrizine too I got last week from the doctor. I think it is settling down now but still slightly light headed. On the flight we were sat over the engine and it was very noisy on take off. One to avoid in future. I used to only have it for a couple of days as I use the Epley manoeuvre to relocate the crystals in my right ear which is usually the side it affects as I can feel a fullness in it when I have an attack. I must remember to sit on the edge of the bed a few minutes before I get up as I blacked out on holiday. Also I wear ear plugs in the shower as water in my ear affects it too.
