Very frustrated

Hi, I haven't been on here for a while, but I need some advice. For a while I've had pain in my fingers, and swelling. Now I've got pins and needles, I can't grip properly I drop thinks I can't peel vegetables, it's upsetting and frustrating. I've had ultrasound a while back, but when I spoke to the doctor performing the test, she said she can't see anything wrong. So why have I got pain, pins and needles in my fingers?

Thank you

If you are having pins and needles in your hand and fingers it MAY be you need an operation on your wrist or hand. The operation is generally done as an Out Patient.

However you have been given the all clear and you are still having problems. You could ask for some further tests performed in Hospital

Carpil Tunnel Syndrom can restrict the nerves and tendons in the wrist that can cause something like this. Sometimes the tendons at the base of finger can also cause problems and if you need to have that eased the operation can be undertaken in a few mins.

Explain your fears, I had a finger done earlier this year and yes it is still a little stiff although the clicking etc has now stopped

Hello I had you appear on a different Forum

Do you suffer PsA. This condition can effect your small joints including your fingers.

If you have the problems with your Skin as well you can discuss this with an Rhumi Specialist. There are blood tests to check your white blood cells.

The condition is caused by an overactive immune system that attacks the joints and skin, also ears and scalp, that is why to see a Dermatologist who will deal with skin complaints.

Your finger joints and possible other areas are treated as Artritis so NSID s Anti-inflamitories may be given to reduce the swelling of joints. With it been related to RA treatments associated with that are given, they are in two groups DMARDs and BIOLOGICS, your Rhumi will suggest a treatment to slow down damage to your joints. You will also be given blood tests and Steriods to help control your condition.

If you have above talk to your GP

I've been to the OT this week and been given some amazing thumb splints that enable me to drive and do cooking prep.  Ask for a referral to a rheumatology OT?

pins and needles indicates nerve compression...perhaps at the carpal tunnel at the wrist....it is the swelling that interests me...I would follow with a rheumatologist

    Hi,

I had Nerve Conduction Studies back in August for the same reason. It was confimed that I have Carpal Tunnel. I wear have worn wrist splints for a long time, which really help.I am also on Stelara a biologic treatment which after discussion with Rheumy Nurse may be another reason

Hi - If you have PsA the inflammation can lead to a pinched nerve, in either your wrist (pins and needles in your thumb and index finger) Carpal tunnel syndrome or your elbow ( pins and needles in your little finger and the one next to it ) Cubital tunnel syndrome. Nerve conduction studies will reveal how bad the compression is for both. In the meantime splints for both wrist and elbow can help.

It does mean you have to sleep with your arms straight. Can be a real pain for your partner! I slept with my arms straight for som many years it's difficult to stop! Had a nerve release for one arm both wrist and elbow.

A PsA flare can increase the tingling again ( paraesthesia) but it goes away once this is under control.

So mention to your reheumatologist when you next see them.

I too have had both the carpal tunnel and the elbow release...multiple elbow releases because of 54 years of JRA

swan neck deformity is caused by contraction within a finger. I have had my swan neck deformities surgically released by tenasynovectomies

Absolutely successful...had it done to all four fingers on my right hand 94ish by Graham Lister originally from University of Edinburgh. He eventually became a professor at University of Utah.
