VERY Odd Change - Sticky

For months my bowel movements have been sticky/fudgy/sludgy and I can't find out why online.

I am 70 and developed IBS-D at 44. It was also the last time I vomited. It came out both ends as I awoke and barely made it into the bathroom. That began many years of misery and accidents. Then about 6 years ago it began alternating with constipation, which then changed over to constipation. but with still a few more D accidents. (I'm glad something made me look up Milk of Magnesia, which is the sure cure for me).

Now it's better than either of the others but still not good. Unless I wait a couple of days to harden it, it's soft and difficult to end without it continuing in small dribs and drabs after I can do no more. There's no blood or other symptoms, and I still sometimes get the feelings I got when I had D for about 16 years when, with no warning, something tells you to stand up to go to the bathroom - and then it's already too late. Three times in one hour, ten years ago. And with this current thing I still get slight feelings of urgency like before, with no accidents, but when I go it's all mush and the problem with that is that it's so nasty to wipe and takes so long to do it.

Another strange thing is if I have no urge to go before a day or so of waiting for the bowel contents to firm up, I'll be solid at first, but the mush invariably follows.

A few weeks ago, around the time the mush situation developed, so did rumbles and horribly stinky rotten-egg farts, which I'd never had before. (They seem to be gone these last few days - and I had never had much in the way of digestive sounds before, either.)

There is no blood. fatigue, or any other symptoms involved. No change in diet or living conditions.

Now, it's better than the other conditions, but still so unpleasant, and I'm wondering just what's going on here? I don't want or need to see a doctor.

hi jenny, oh gosh this sounds dreadful. i think this is not normal and i think a doctor now needs to know this. it's possible you have IBS which switches from constipation to diarrhoea quickly. as you are so constipated like i used to be you may need a bowel softener. do you get other symptoms like no feeling in your leg, numbness, a sense of urgency you can't control. if this is the case the nerve might be compressed, for this you definitely need to see a doctor. as your bowel movements have changed you need to contact your doctor anyway, i was told i had to. i wish you luck.

    Hi Jenny

This is spooky because I just came on this website to post about something so so similar and your message appears.

I have just turned 48 and have been having bowels issues for the past 3 years approx, so I probably started around the same age as you, 44.

I had been noticing for some time that before a bowel movement I would feel really odd and nervous, sweaty and shaky and my heart would race and after pooping I would feel ok again. This used to happen now and again but as time.progressed it was happening more and more often and I would also feel bad before, during and after pooping, lasting about half an hour, which wouldn't be so bad if I went once a day, but on average I was going 5 times a day. My poop is also sticky and mushy and I have not had complete accidents but whenever I stand up from pooping there is always a little extra that then comes out, and it takes forever to wipe.

I have tried gluten free, dairy free and other diets, pills and potions. I have had some testing and still waiting for further tests and I'm desperate. I'm afraid to go anywhere. Today I very almost had an accident, just made it to the loo.

So I'm sorry that I can't offer any help but as you can see you're not alone.

Let's hope someone might come along with a suggestion.

    Take care x
