Very Painful Left Buttock.

Hi Everyone, it's been a very long time since I have been on this site. Just recently noticed I wasn't getting any emails, that is now sorted.

Diagnosed 4 years ago with PMR started on 20mg of Prednislone. I am on 2mg of Pred now and have been for just over a year. I woke up yesterday morning (well tossed and turned throughout the night), I found it very difficult to turn over in bed as pain/ache in left buttock is excruiciating. It reminded me of the start of PMR but is only in left cheek butt. I thought maybe Sciatica but have no shooting/stabbing pain down leg. It feels like it has been overworked or like a stretched ham string (not that I've ever experienced that). Every time I get up from the chair is painful. Bursitis maybe, Probably have to get it checked out but feel so incapacitated - I don't think I could drive. Every time I try to sit or get up from a sitting position is painful. Maybe up my pred tonight. Any suggestions will be gratefully received and Thank You All in Advance.

I am going to try and have a nap now as I am exhausted .

Sounds suspiciously like piriformis syndrome to me - the piriformis muscle spasms and can trap/irritate the sciatic nerve. Initially it doesn't cause pain all the way down the leg but if left that may appear later, depending on how tightly the nerve becomes pinched by the muscle. But it typically causes one-sides buttock pain and aches into the top of the back of the thigh.

You could try googling it and should find exercises which are designed to stretch the muscle and relieve the pain.

Ah Dear Eileen, thank you so much for your reply. Put my electric blanket on and lay in bed for a while, turned the blanket off and had a nap, when I got up - left butt cheek not as sore as it was. Heat seems to help it. Will look for stretches on the internet. Thanks again.

Look up the yoga pigeon pose, that really helps with my glute pains.

Thank you Floramac, I have to be careful, as I have osteoporisis in lumbar region of spine. Dexa scan showed -3.7 in the lumber region, that was two and a half years ago but I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Many thanks

I personally would not up my pred dose yet - especially if heat has helped a bit so far. i have many spine issues and most manifest with pain in the butt ! i would continue with the heat and some pain relief to get you over this hurdle while you try to get appointment with your doc....i wouldn't recommend any stretch or exercise yet either - especially with your osteoporosis but you could just try a long leg stretch (one over the other) while laying down but wouldnt go further than that without a 2nd opinion. you could try a heat pad or hot water bottle while sitting in chair too.....good luck x

Thank you missmagwumps - You are right - the heat has eased it greatly along with paracetamol and getting down to 2mg I was so reluctant to up the dose - but at that time I was in agony. As for any exercise, well I couldn't even get down on the floor, never mind up again. Having said that I know some people do exercises on their bed. At present I am reluctant because I would be afraid of doing more harm than good. I am actually sitting/half sitting on a hot water bottle wrapped in a little towel. If it was to continue then I would see my Dr. but I don't feel the need just now.

Our bodies are great at healing, if we can let them, so that's what I am doing now.

      The heat is really helping.

Thank you all for comments - My son says I am a pain the butt lol I can smile now 😃

When I have low back muscle pain I do find sitting with a hot water bottle across the painful area does work eventually - unfortunately it isn't very practical long term!

Really laughing out loud. The hot water bottle has definitely eased it, but at the angle I am sitting at, I'm liable to put a strain on the right cheek. Oh the joys of life 😃

No - don't sit on it - put it on your back hollow - which is where the pain may be emanating from.....lol x ANd in my previous message re stretching - I did mean on the bed...I wouldn't contemplate anything on the floor - I'd never get backup again....x

I understand that although my butt cheek is very sore, it is emanating from somewhere in my back. Yeah sitting lopsided could do more damage, me thinks. lol

It has eased greatly due to the heat and paracetamol, at least I can get up from the settee now, whereas before it was like the muscle tearing.

Another kind person suggested the pigeon pose in yoga. I looked it up and knew that never in a million years could I do that, even on the bed. It was a nice gesture though.

Well tomorrow is a new day and thanks to everyone who replied.

I didn't look at it when i read the post - I sort of assumed it was hopeful thinking... Now I have looked. Yeah, right!

I was laughing at the part where you said "it's not practical long term". (the hot water bottle) I had visions of me carrying it with me wherever I go, or tied round my waist. Would not be a pretty sight. Still sore today but not half as bad.

Well girl, that says it all. I am in stitches here laughing. It's so appropriate. Now if I could walk properly, I could shop for one. Forgot I can shop on the internet.

Hopefully I will not need one, if the pain and ache is not away by Wednesday then I will have to make an appointment to see my Dr.

Never thought I would laugh this much over a sore left cheek butt 😃

      Thanks Eileen
