Very painful trapped wind!

Posted , 8 users are following.

for the last ten years or so , I have had bouts of extremely painful trapped wind. It used to be only a few times a year but has for the last few years been once or twice a month or sometimes more. It starts after I have woken up and got out of bed. I can feel like a curl of discomfort in my stomach which gets more and more pronounced as time goes by. It builds up in intensity until I’m unable to walk unless doubled over and it makes me moan continually! I’ve tried everything, sipping cooled boiled water, colpermin, ginger, ginger /peppermint tea, peppermint, Rennes, deflatine, Andrews, gaviscon, bending over, squatting, ....pretty much every preparation on the market. Except buscopan, which I have just bought and not yet tried. My question is this, what causes this? I’ve read that swallowing air does it. I’ve tried not to do this but I’m not sure if this is what does it . I eat slowly and chew well. It doesn’t happen specifically after a particular food like beans. I eat broccoli regularly so it doesn’t correspond with that. My GP suggested I had IBS years ago before this started and I’ve not wanted to bother them with this particular problem. My stomach has been better from an IBS point of view since I started eating kefir probiotic. Things have calmed down considerably , the shifting feeling when I lie down in bed, the noises, I’m more regular too, so I continue with the kefir daily. But it has not stopped the trapped wind, it is driving me mad, I’m starting to not want to get out of bed in the morning because I’m afraid to feel that curling feeling!  Oh, and as time goes by I can feel it start to move very gradually , until after 24 - 36 hours later, I feel it leaving me.... Has anyone else had this experience? Any tips? Thanks for reading. J.

IBS can cause gas and it can go away for a while and then come back.  Try bicarbonate of soda

I think Andrews would pretty much have the same effect as bicarbonate of soda and although this helps with nausea or indigestion which is higher up in the chest area, it doesn’t help with wind that is trapped in the upper stomach unfortunately. Thank you for taking the time to comment though 👍🏻

Have you tried bicarbonate of soda?  If you haven't, it would still be worth trying it. Wind in the upper stomach is still indigestion.  My dad uses it for wind and it works for him. Try avoiding gassy drinks and gassy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts.  If none of these things work, your next step is to see your doctor!

Consider what you are eating that can cause wind also if you are stressed, this can, sometimes cause problems.

Some times the bowel can cause problems if irritated

Consider your Diet and look into how you feel Anxiety wise, as you have mentioned gulping air can also cause problems

If you have not seen your GP over time go discuss your problems again, put your mind at rest, there are various things they can try to help you

I think you are right in thinking that something in the diet causes this. I just can’t pinpoint it as it isn’t consistent, I can eat something like lentils on one occasion but eat them on another occasion and have symptoms afterwards. As for going to the GP, I’m averse to going as I find that they just look at me as if I’m completely mad, and would like to say really, you are asking me about wind, go away and take a rennie!

And I am an anxious person, and I’m sure that does play a part. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to do anything about this..☹️. Thanks for the advice.

When you can't solve a medical problem with home remedies, this is when you should see your doctor. If you don't do this, you will not solve your problem. Your doctor will not laugh at you.  He or she will listen to your concerns and offer a diagnosis and treatment.  If you are laughed at, simply report the misconduct to the rececptionist, make an ofticial complaint and change your doctor.  I reported a nurse for laughing at my concerns and belittling me.  She got the sack along with the nurse who gave me permanent neuropathy after a blood test that she was incapable of doing.

When my stomach pain and constipation persisted for two weeks, I bit back my fear and reservstions and went straight to my doctor.  I had to keep seeing different doctors because a lot of them were useless and some I felt were laughing at me.  I didn't allow them to put me off and I eventually found someone three and a half months later who listened to my concerns professionally and diagnosed me with IBS.

This is what you need to do if you want results. Your doctor can give you expert help and reassure you.  Bob is right about seeing your doctor.

      Never said take a Rennie.

Your first stop is your GP, in the first instance He will discuss your diet and possibly medications.

You may need to see a Specialist, the problem is you may need to wait if in the UK, your GP will know that and will try and help. Your Colon may need to be examined and the medications before testing will really clean you out, the same after the examination.

Your GP will try and consider your immediate needs, He know what needs to be done. There medications I took when abroad and these may be advised

Peas and Lentils can cause wind as many other foods.

Your GP will help. Make a list before you go and refer to that in Surgery, that will help you remember all your health problems. You will gain more out of your appointment. An aversion to a visit to your GP is all well and good, although there are times where a visit will help you, so do not be a stranger go for that chat. Remember your Doctor cannot treat a problem if He does not know what is going on.

If you fail to make an appointment you will eventually feel worse and the Anxiety will then become problematic

Firstly I would advise you to go and get checked out by GP after that you know your dealing with IBS or just straight forward trapped wind which can cause extreme pain, yours could possibly be cholic, that's like a tight gripping pain, get some gripe water from chemist, if it's good enough for babies it's got to be safe,I once called an ambulance for my friend as I thought it was something bad, they told her to do a circular motion on her tummy, clock wise, are you going ok

Thank you, I will check out colic on the internet and see what exactly it is and if that is maybe what it is. 👍🏻

Yes! Oh my God, you are speaking my language. I thought I was the only one that experience this. People think I'm crazy when I try to describe it because when I say gas they think of, for lack of better words, farting. But this gas is air that is actually trapped almost like you can feel it in your intestines, like marbles running through  tubes. Sometimes I pass it but most of the time it builds up. It gets worse when I am forced to hold whatever will come out in, and it just makes it worse from there. I have also tried everything as well, the problem is most products  aim to get rid of the gas in your stomach not the kind you and I have.    Shiffs makes a  digestive pills/probiotic that is aimed to target and prevent intestinal gas. I don't necessarily know if that works, it definitely does not get rid of it but it makes the problem little bit better. I am fortunate enough to not have this issue every single day, but I have it more often than I would like.   When I am constipated, and use an enema to relieve the constipation, the enema makes this gas even worse intensifying at 100% more.    Like you I have tried everything from supplements to yoga to relaxation everything. Laying on my left side sometimes helps me pass the gas.    Last night, coincidentally, I took to Dulcolax, laxative pills, and that seemed to help. I was however backed up a little which is why I took the 2 o'clock's, but some how it also helped with the gas.    You may have something called SIBO.   I was tested for it and my test came back negative although I think I still have it. It is basically an overgrowth of bacteria in your digestive system, along with the bacteria growing in the wrong parts of your digestive system. When I self diagnosed, I read up on it and antibiotics and diet  were recommended to alleviate the problem, I did have extra antibiotics from a previous element, which I started taking. It did seem like the antibiotics that I took actually did help my problem, not fix it, but make it better.   Another product that helped me was Atrantil.   This is a product that is specifically aimed to fix gas in the intestinal system. My first week on it I felt amazing, but because my issue is also constipation, it stopped working. However if you do not have constipation issues, maybe you will have better luck with that. Unfortunately it seems like nothing  I do completely get rid of the symptoms just helps improve the quality of my life, and contains these issues more so. I truly feel your pain!

This is the problem with conditions like IBS.  Medications often only reduce symptoms rather than get rid of them completely.

Hello, I did reply to your post but it doesn’t seem to appear here...🤔🤔. In short, I’m sorry to hear you suffer the same horrible condition but glad I’m not alone! I’m interested in the Atrantil you mentioned, but I haven’t heard of this here in the uk. Are you in the US?

Hi, have you tried keeping a food diary just in case it’s an intolerance to something? If you are an anxious person however, it will sometimes effect your breathing, people with anxiety tend to take shallower breaths and this can lead to trapped wind. I would also agree with taking either gripe water or bicarbonate of soda, I’ve used these myself in the past. Mix the bicarbonate with warm water from the kettle and stir it, it can help - I don’t know the composition of Andrews, so I don’t know if this works in the exact same way.

It’s worth going back to your doctor again, just to check for anything else. For example, Coeliac disease (trust me, everyone’s symptoms are different with this). If something is going on for some time, I’m sure your doctor would prefer you to go in and see them.

It’s all trial and error with stomach problems isn’t it?! You seem to have success with one rememdy on one occasion, then not the next. I have just had the most awful noises coming from my stomach with everything shifting around., but then after a quick dash upstairs.....relief....until the next time. I find myself grabbing every remedy going in the hope that something will work. All I know is, somebody is making an awful lot of  money out of sufferers like us! I’m off to buy a bottle of gripe water, it’s just a pity they removed the alcohol from it, it’s not the same as when I used to give it to my son when he was a baby. Thank you for your help 👍🏻
