It is expected to be tender after the surgery . On this site the scale will range greatly mine healed very well and had no issues at all however if you are older you may not heal as quickly . has it been tender all along and got worse and is there any seepage etc as it really shod be all knitted well by now ?

hi. if your wound is sore and red surrounding the incision itself I'd get it checked out by your GP or Practice Nurse. it's better to be over cautious than under imo. best wishes

hi. good. you just need to rule out any infection really. my surgeon sd as well if I needed any antibiotics from my GP they needed to know - presume to be aware in case more deeper than skin infection but the nurse should be aware of that.
good luck

I am on the "younger" scale of hip replacement age. my incision was very sore. My surgeon explained to me it is a massive operation and they "dig" into muscle layers and "irritate" nerves. I heal with keloid tissue which is tender and stings at times. I had my replacement on 21 July (due to s freak accident where my femural neck was crushed). It was an uphill, as my body did not respond well to the spinal block and general anaesthetic "poisoning". I only have a "normal" life since the last two weeks. I can still feel my incision, but I can sleep on that side now. At your stage I could feel soreness right to the prosthesis. I never had pain, just discomfort and soreness. I had a world class surgical team, and I was warned it will take 12-16 months to fully recover. I respect that and I want to heal 100%. my experience was shocking and traumatic. But I walk short distances (just get tired), climb stairs and go down freely. I sleep well again. I do sleep on two sheepskins. In my first two months I joined this forum as I felt so desperately ill and sore. But I feel better physically and mentally. I have an urge to walk my normal distance and exercise more, but I am just not there yet. I am still a bit "bionic" and movement at times unpredictable.

hello, thank you for your reply. you have been through the wars, i have done well really but i am concerned about the reddness and soreness, it was looking so good, cannot lay on either side yet. You read in some cases that they are back to normal in 6wks so it made me think i wasnt doing so good, i still think i have a long way to go, It does make you feel better talking to people in the same boat as you.

just so you can see how the experiences vary I was back to running although tentatively at week 4 ,back to work week 5 , ran a 10k by week 7 and was sleeping on the scar from week 4 . Not bragging just showing that there are differences and dont beat yourself up for being sore.

day 2 of antibiotics and reddening has definitely reduced - flucloxacillin seems to be working. How are you doing?

Hi Sue - I am on day 28 today and last night, I woke up as my leg was aching and my leg felt really tender around my wound - i switched on the lamp in the middle of the night to see that my leg was red and swollen around the wound itself. i was really surprised as up until this point, my scar has looked perfect. I went to see the doctor this morning, who has prescribed antibiotics - 4 per day for a week. i am really hoping that sorts things out. hopefully yours will settle down soon. Jane
