Viking gene

Just read something about PMR being most common among people of Scandinavian origin, and that the inclination toward PMR could have been spread by the Vikings during their excursions. I know that researchers are finding evidence that, in their active times, the Vikings had traveled further than previously thought, such as the middle east, and even northern India.
I find that interesting. It could mean that we who are afflicted with PMR carry a Viking gene. Maybe that explains the occasional urge I get to sack and pillage some small English village. (grin)

....or Welsh or Irish or Scottish or Norman village. All of whose DNA figure prominently in my genetic endowment. Fascinating! Thx for posting this, Richard!

That's true Richard! People of Scandinavian and northern European origins are more prone to PMR and GCA. I'm one of them, being Danish (but I live in the UK). I had PMR and am now coming up to 4 years with GCA. There is no known reason why this is so. That's also why there are more people with PMR in the states in the USA which were originally settled by Scandinavians.

This is interesting. I have Behcet's, too, as well as Hasimotos'.
Behcet's is known as The Silk Route Disease. Have often wondered about the connection.
There is one cousin with the possibility of Behcet's. Nobody that I know with PMR, though it's my humble opinion that PMR gets missed, sometimes.
Have never done a DNA test. Might think about it.
My very good doctor did tell me, once an individual has one autoimmune disease, others are not unlikely.
Wish he hadn't said that.
Prednisone helps at least two of mine. Don't hold any hope of getting off of it at this point. Must reframe and be grateful for help.

MariGrace, I was told too by a consultant that once you have an autoimmune illness, you are more prone to getting another one.

thats my heritage too. i think its in our genes, that we have a predisposition to the illness. but i think something triggers it; we havent figured out that part yet.

Mind you - when you have your DNA "done" you often discover the expected heritages don't appear...

I had mine done and Scandinavia doesn't appear as such, but of course it could be hidden in the British part. My Ancestry DNA result matched what I had been told by my father. 😃

Why did I not get the gorgeous long legs and blond locks as well then? Thanks a lot Vikings!

You got it Richard. I was born in Amsterdam and have traced my ancestors to Dutch people from the northern countryside to the late 1700's, no mixing from what I found up to that point. Then again.
a horny Roman may have come through town a few thousand years ago! I am going to do the DNA test just for fun. My first cousin in Holland on my mother's side is dealing with PMR right now and I went into remission last June. Just imagine how miserable those ancestors and Vikings were dealing with this without any medicine like Prednisone.

To be really cheerful - they may well never have lived long enough to suffer from it. The link with Scandinavian genes is based on modern cases.

And is it not based on a group in Minnesota or somewhere in the US where that immigration thing may be coming into play? The immigrant group contains a certain gene and over time it shows up more frequently just because of the limited population; the effect is not as diluted as it would be in the originating country.

Richard,
Yes I had my DNA taken last year, and discovered I am 15% scandinavian, born in Australia, this has come from my Father's side from his g.g Grandfather. I also have PMR and if you google Vikings and PMR there is some interesting info. about it, but not proved. When I told my Doctor, he laughed, said "oh now we are going to blame the poor Vikings" I told him why not! and suggested he google it himself. Yes there is a whole village in USA with Scandinavian heritage and their children grow up and also have PMR, something is going on for sure.
My grandaughters (twins) and Grandson are all blue eyed and very blonde as myself, but I have green eyes, people are always asking where did it come from.

There are a lot of sites correlating PMR and Scandinavian ancestry. Surprisingly most of them are pretty dry reading. Try the above site and note the section entitled Epidemiology.

Jeanne,
Sorry it didn't come through as a "clickable" site. I'm not very good at cutting and pasting.
